One of the most promising images of the San Diego Chargers' camp this season has been the play of tight end Antonio Gates.

He looks like Antonio Gates.

The man who faces him every day in practice is so sold that the potential Hall of Fame tight end is completely back to form after dealing with several foot-related injuries for the past four years, that he has a message for the rest of the NFL.

“He’s going to be the best tight end in the NFL this year,” San Diego Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle said Thursday. “The best. You can’t guard him … I know there are a lot good tight ends coming up in the league, but Antonio is the best. He looks that good. He hasn’t looked this good since my rookie season.”

Fantasy Impact:

For what it's worth, Weddle was a rookie in 2007, when Gates caught 75 passes for 984 yards and 9 touchdowns.

"Taking nothing away from Mike Tolbert, who caught more than 50 balls for us, but when he was singled-up because of the way people played Antonio Gates, we didn’t get the big plays out of him we did with Sproles. I know Ronnie Brown is going to make big plays because he has the ability to make the first tackler miss.”

And don’t forget Brown all but invented the wildcat in Miami. Norv won’t be afraid to use it.

“We got some big plays out of the wildcat with LT and Sproles,” he said. “It’s not something we’re going to major in, but if we run it four-five times a game, it isn’t going to take anything away from Philip, and it’s something defenses have to prepare for.”

At the very least, it sounds like Brown is entrenched as the backup to Ryan Mathews.

“The best thing is, he can actually run,” Rapoport stated on Inside Training Camp Live on Tuesday. “… He’s in shape. He looks skinny. He was burning cornerbacks left and right in practice. … He is feeling healthier now than he’s been in a couple of years.

“He is really looking like he’s primed for a big, big season.”
