WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Los Angeles Rams

Antonio Gibson had his best game of the season last week as he's starting to emerge as a solid fantasy asset. Gibson totaled 128 scrimmage yards on a season-high 17 touches (13 carries, 4 receptions). He was still behind J.D. McKissic in playing time (39 snaps to 31), but Gibson has been the more productive back for Washington. Gibson has now scored in three straight games and has led Washington's backfield in carries for three straight games. He gets a solid matchup this week against the Rams who rank 27th in aFPA. Gibson should be trusted as an RB2 play in Week 5.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Antonio Gibson finished with 60 scrimmage yards and a touchdown last week, giving him scores in back-to-back weeks. He played on fewer snaps (39%) than J.D. McKissic (53%), but was more productive. It's still somewhat surprising to see the converted receiver not have a bigger role in the passing game, but at least he's producing on the ground. He'll draw a tough matchup this week against the Ravens, who are second in aFPA to running backs. Gibson should be viewed as a low-end RB2 or a decent flex play in Week 4.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns

Antonio Gibson hasn't quite been what we expected from him. The converted receiver has only caught three passes this year for five yards. Gibson did, however, improve as a runner in Week 2, finishing with a team-high 13 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown. Peyton Barber, who saw 17 carries in Week 1, was limited to just one carry in Week 2. Barber also saw just one offensive snap all game while Gibson led the backfield in playing time with 65% of the snaps played. Gibson appears to have taken over the starting role now, although he's still splitting time with J.D. McKissic. Gibson should be viewed as a strong flex play in Week 3 against the Browns.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Arizona Cardinals

Antonio Gibson wasn't terrible in Week 1, but he certainly didn't live up to expectations. Gibson ran the ball nine times for 36 yards while hauling in just two passes (on two targets) for eight yards. Peyton Barber stole the show in Washington's backfield by rushing 17 times and playing on 41% of the snaps compared to Gibson's 26%. J.D. McKissic actually led all backs in playing time with 44% of the snaps. We'd expect Gibson's usage to increase throughout the season as the rookie continues to learn. Barber and McKissic were both ineffective in Week 1, so giving Gibson the ball more would make sense. As for now, though, Gibson should be viewed as a flex play in Week 2 against Arizona.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

At one point this offseason, Antonio Gibson was a nice sleeper candidate sitting behind Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson. But both of those backs are gone now, and Gibson has suddenly emerged as a real fantasy option. Gibson worked out at the NFL Combine as a receiver after playing the position in Memphis. Now, he'll transition to running back where he should be the focus out of Washington's backfield. There's still some skepticism considering he's a rookie and fellow pass-catcher J.D. McKissic is listed as the starter. But we like Gibson as a sneaky RB2 play in PPR formats and an RB3 play in standard leagues in Week 1 against the Eagles.

WAS RB Antonio Gibson - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Antonio Gibson was a third-round draft pick by Washington this season and head coach Ron Rivera has already compared him to Christian McCaffrey. Rivera said of Gibson, "This is a very versatile, young football player that we really think is going to be a guy that can get on the field for us early and contribute." Gibson mostly played receiver in college, but he’s built more as a running back, which is what he’ll most likely play as a rookie. Still, that receiver background makes him an intriguing option in Washington. And with Derrius Guice’s injury history, we could see Gibson getting more playing time than most expect in 2020.

Fantasy Downside
It’s difficult to figure out where Gibson fits into Washington’s plans. Washington already has Guice, Adrian Peterson and even Bryce Love in this crowded backfield. They even added Peyton Barber and J.D. McKissic, two players who were relevant in fantasy just last year. And while Gibson played some running back in college at Memphis, playing running back at the professional level is a completely different thing. There’s simply a lot we don’t know about Gibson.

2020 Bottom Line
Gibson is a very intriguing fantasy option heading into 2020. The McCaffrey comparison is exciting, although it’d be a stretch to expect McCaffrey production from Gibson. However it’s not a stretch to see Washington use him as an overall offensive weapon, featuring him in the backfield, the slot or other areas of the field. Gibson is someone who has a very late ADP you can stash on your bench with the hopes he’ll carve out a role for himself.
