JAX WR Brian Thomas Jr. - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Houston Texans

The rookie Brian Thomas has taken claim as the WR1 in Jacksonville early on, leading the team in receiving yards (189) and is tied for the lead in targets (17). That includes nine targets last week against the Bills. Of course, the game got ugly for the Jags very early. Still, it's nice to see Thomas already being trusted in the offense. But given the struggles overall on offense, it's hard to trust Thomas as anything more than a flex play against the Texans, through no fault of his own.

JAX WR Brian Thomas Jr. - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Buffalo Bills

So far, it’s the rookie Brian Thomas who has led the way in the passing game for the Jags. He has 141 receiving yards and the lone receiving touchdown. Only Gabe Davis has more targets through two games. Buffalo brings a strong secondary to the table so the rookie will be tested on Monday night. He should be viewed as flex given his targets but also the early struggles from Trevor Lawrence.

JAX WR Brian Thomas Jr. - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Cleveland Browns

Not a bad debut at all for the rookie Brian Thomas Jr. He tied for the team lead with four targets against the Dolphins as Trevor Lawrence spread the ball around a bit -- five receivers each had at least three targets. Of course, Lawrence only threw the ball 21 times and completed 12 passes. Thomas scored his first NFL touchdown and is already starting to look the part of being a key piece to the Jaguars offense. He does have a tough matchup this week against the trio of Denzel Ward, Greg Newsome and Martin Emerson in the Browns secondary. Because of the possibility the Jags have another tough day in the air, the ceiling is lowered for Thomas. He remains a WR3 for the week.

JAX WR Brian Thomas Jr. - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Brian Thomas Jr. flashed plenty of upside while at LSU. In his final season at LSU, Thomas caught 68 passes for 1,177 yards and 17 touchdowns, all while being overshadowed to an extent by Malik Nabers. The Jags were also quite high on Thomas going into the draft. He very well could start the season as the WR2 for the Jaguars.

Fantasy Downside

Rookie receivers are always tough to predict in fantasy. Thomas could also start the season behind Christian Kirk and Evan Engram in the pecking order as he gets up to NFL speed.

2024 Bottom Line

Even with being behind Kirk and Engram, there should still be plenty of targets to go around with Calvin Ridley (Titans) and Zay Jones (Cardinals) no longer in Jacksonville. Trevor Lawrence should be looking Thomas' way often once he's ready to be let loose in the offense. Being the WR2 for the Jags will bring some value. For now, consider Thomas a deeper flex, but one with a higher floor.
