Fantasy Upside
No team threw the ball more to running backs in 2014 (166 times) than the Saints. That bodes well for C.J. Spiller’s production, as he figures to fill a role similar to former New Orleans’ RBs Darren Sproles and Reggie Bush in Sean Payton’s offense. Our projections have Spiller catching 72 passes this season, which would make him a high-end RB2 in PPR leagues. Payton is one of the best play-callers in the league and excels at getting the ball into the hands of space players. If Spiller stays healthy, he will have a fantasy impact in 2015.
Fantasy Downside
Spiller has been a fantasy tease since entering the league in 2010. After he finished as fantasy’s No. 7 running back in 2012, owners got burned in 2013 when he fell to RB27 and then he completely fell off the map in 2014 after breaking his collarbone in October. (Spiller dropped all the way to RB72 thanks to playing in only nine games.) The hype surrounding Spiller this offseason is palpable and it could lead to the newest Saint being overdrafted this offseason. Outside of 2012, Spiller’s production hasn’t matched his fantasy potential. He's also dealing with a knee injury, although Payton says he should be ready for Week 1.
Bottom Line
Spiller is worth the investment as a RB2 in PPR leagues and offers good value as an early fourth-round pick. Assuming he stays healthy, he could catch 70-plus passes in Payton’s offense and if something were to happen to Mark Ingram, Spiller is also first in line to become the Saints’ top back. But while we have him ranked as our No. 14 overall RB in PPR leagues, he’s our No. 27 RB in standard formats, so be conscious of your league’s scoring. Spiller should be viewed only as depth in standard leagues.
