Scouting report

BUF RB C.J. Spiller - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4: Spiller vs Texans
C.J. Spiller was not used as much in the loss the Chargers last week. He had only 10 carries and 3 catches. That's surprising considering the word out of Buffalo is they want to get Spiller more involved in the offense.

This week, Spiller has a very good matchup against the Texans who have not fared well against running backs. Hopefully, Spiller will get back to his workload and maybe even more.

Start Spiller as a solid RB2 start with six teams on bye.

BUF RB C.J. Spiller - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3: Spiller vs Chargers
Has C.J. Spiller finally arrived? Are the Bills for real? Still two very legitimate questions, but Spiller is putting up good numbers but still not getting the touches an RB1 should get.

His touches went down from Week 1 and although it's early, it appears that Fred Jackson will continue to be in the mix.

Start Spiller as a solid RB2 for Week 3 against an average San Diego run defense. Until we see more touches, he's an RB2 with upside.

BUF RB C.J. Spiller - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2: Spiller vs Dolphins
The Bills were able to get offense from many different sources and C.J. Spiller was a part of it. The starting back carried the ball 15 times for 53 yards and caught the 3 times for 11 yards.

Spiller got the touches we will probably see while Fred Jackson is still a factor. They were basically thought to be 1 and 1a for Buffalo. But Spiller actually this game had twice as many carries as Jackson.

Spiller faces an average Dolphins run defense. Expect some more touches in the passing game, but overall Spiller rates an RB2 for Week 2. He should start for your team, but he's going to be a boom or bust play weekly.

BUF RB C.J. Spiller - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
C.J. Spiller is still considered the No. 1 running back in Buffalo and for good reason. His talent level is up there with the best in the NFL. Two seasons ago he ran for 1,244 yards and averaged 6.0 yard per carry. He also was a threat in the passing game. The biggest strength of Spiller is his game speed. He is one of the faster running backs to the hole and can make people miss.

Fantasy Downside
The biggest issue in his positives was the wording 'two years ago'. Spiller's numbers were down in 2013. His yardage total fell to 933 and his yard per carry also fell to 4.6, which is still a decent stat. He dealt with an ankle injury that was lingering throughout the year so that might be an excuse for the step backward. Another issue is Spiller and touchdowns. He only had two and never carried the ball inside the 5 yard line.

Bottom Line
Spiller ranks 16th in standard leagues and 19th in PPR leagues in running back rankings. There is some concern about his touches. Fred Jackson is back and the Bills also acquired Bryce Brown. But a healthy Spiller is still the best option for the Bills at RB. If he can stay healthy, Spiller has legitimate RB1 upside. He's a boom or bust pick in the 4th round.
