SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Colin Kaepernick Week 2 vs Bears
Colin Kaepernick threw for just 202 yards and two scores - both to Vernon Davis - last week against Dallas as the defense did a lot of the heavy lifting against the Cowboys. The Bears were awful against the run in 2013 and were unable to stop the Bills again last week. You can bet the 49ers' attack will be run-first this week as well, though Kaepernick can exploit some things as well, both with his arm and legs. He should be solid, if unspectacular this week.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Colin Kaepernick Week 1 vs Cowboys
Dallas was dead last in the NFL in 2013 in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks. That's pretty much all you need to know. Kaepernick should be a nice safe start this week against a terrible defense.

SF QB Colin Kaepernick - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
One of the best scrambling quarterbacks in the NFL, Kapernick can beat you with his arm or his feet. He’s also proven to be pretty durable thus far, making all 16 starts in 2013 despite being sacked 39 times and running with it another 92 times.

Fantasy Downside
The 49ers are very content to run, run, run the ball and allow Kapernick to hand it off a lot. They trust their defense and he had just 416 passing attempts in 2013, an average of 26 times per game, despite the fact he’s got some dangerous weapons.

Bottom Line
Kapernick’s ADP has him being taken in the ninth or 10th round, ahead of guys such as Tony Romo, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger. Sorry, I’m not buying that. He averaged 199 yards passing per game in 2013 and had just 21 touchdown passes. Yes, he added another 524 yards and four scores rushing, but he’s just not going to run as much now as he did in 2012 when he wasn’t the starter. Kapernick had five games in 2013 when he had less than 150 yards passing in a game and nine games with one or fewer touchdown passes. That’s not going to cut it. I’d rather have one of the aforementioned players as my top QB. Draft Kapernick as a backup and hope that he builds on his 2013 season. Maybe he will. But I’m not counting on it.
