Browns QB Brock Osweiler to start 1st preseason game

Browns head coach Hue Jackson announced via a statement Monday that Brock Osweiler would start the team's first preseason game over Cody Kessler and rookie DeShone Kizer:

"A lot goes into our evaluation but it’s always going to be about efficiently and effectively running the offense," Jackson said. "You want your starter to be able to do that despite any circumstance. Brock hasn’t really gotten any first team reps and this will give him that chance. We look forward to seeing what he can do with this opportunity throughout the week and against the Saints."

Fantasy Impact: 

It's notable that Jackson admits Osweiler hasn't gotten any first team reps in training camp. That should be all you need to hear that this is still clearly an open competition. The first preseason game is generally the easiest for a quarterback with defenses playing vanilla schemes and starters barely playing. If Osweiler plays poorly, you can probably eliminate him from this competition.

Browns WR Corey Coleman believes he'll be cleared in assault probe

Wide receiver Corey Coleman said Thursday on the first day of Browns training camp he's confident he'll be cleared in the assault investigation that resulted in felony charges against his brother and friend.

"Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,'' Coleman said when asked if he'll be cleared.

Coleman is still under investigation because a probable cause affidavit filed with the Cuyahoga County grand jury indictment says all three men attacked the 26-year-old Mayfield Heights man.

Jonathan Coleman, a 25-year-old former Kansas State University football player, and Jared Floyd, 24, both of Dallas are charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony.

Fantasy Impact: 

Coleman declined to answer questions about the events of that night at his downtown condominium, when a man was beat and then left in the parking garage unconscious. Surveillance videos show Coleman, his brother and friend following Sapp into a stairwell, according to Sapp and police. The fight is not captured on video.

Browns QB Cody Kessler (concussion) took full practice reps all week. The Browns plan to start Robert Griffin III this week. He had an impressive preseason (22-of-38 for 313 yards with three touchdowns and an 8.2 YPA) before getting injured during a less-than-stellar Week 1 outing against the Eagles. The Browns want to see if Griffin is the quarterback of the future. In his sole start, Griffin targeted Terrelle Pryor (7), Corey Coleman (5) and Duke Johnson (5) the most.
