OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Chicago Bears in London

Waller continues to be the lone bright spot for the black hole. He hasn’t scored a touchdown but is the Half PPR TE6. Last week, he had a team-high seven receptions on eight targets, 53 yards, 26% of the team targets, 12% of the team air yards.

Technically, this is a home for the Raiders but it will take place in London. Tyrell Williams and J.J. Nelson are questionable. If both players are ruled out on Sunday morning, Waller’s usage could skyrocket. 4for4 rankings expert John Paulsen has Waller ranked as the Half PPR TE5 against the Bears who are eight worst against the tight end position, per our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. Waller has established himself as an every week tight end starter.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Indianapolis Colts

Waller is the lone bright spot for the Raiders. He hasn’t scored a touchdown but is still the half PPR TE5. Somehow, Waller is already a breakout tight end and he hasn’t even found the end zone yet. His usage through three weeks is off the charts. He has 26 receptions on 29 targets, 267 yards, 30% of the team targets, and 26% of the team air yards. Last week, he finished as the half PPR TE4 with 20.6 fantasy points. 20.6 Half PPR points and he didn’t even score a touchdown! He had 13 receptions on 14 targets, 134 yards, 41% of the team targets, 41% of the team air yards, and played on 53/59 snaps (90%).

Waller could continue his hot streak this week because the Colts are seventh-worst against tight ends, as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. The Colts scheme towards allowing short passes to tight ends and running backs rather than giving up big plays to wide receivers. 4for4 rankings expert John Paulsen has Waller ranked as the Half PPR TE3.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Waller finished Week 1 as the half PPR TE10 with 10.5 fantasy points. He had seven receptions on eight targets, 70 yards, 31% of the team targets, 26% of the team air yards, and played on 58/58 snaps (100%).

The Kansas City secondary is atrocious against tight ends as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric that has them ranked dead last in the NFL. The Raiders could find themselves behind by multiple touchdowns, which would benefit Waller who was used heavily in Week 1. Week 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has him ranked as the Half PPR TE6 and is worth starting in fantasy lineups.

OAK TE Darren Waller - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Denver Broncos

Darren Waller's workout metrics are ridiculously good. Per Player Profiler, his 40-yard dash time, 4.46 seconds, ranks in 99th percentile and his speed score, 131.6, ranks in the 99th percentile. He was drafted in 2015 by the Baltimore Ravens as a wide receiver but transitioned to playing tight end.

Darren Waller looked like a fringe tight end starter in Week 1 until the Antonio Brown was traded to the Patriots. The trade boosted Waller up to PPR TE13 in Week 1 with a median projection of 8.8 fantasy points in John Paulsen's rankings. Waller gained significant value for the rest of the when Antonio Brown was traded.

OAK TE Darren Waller - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Waller’s workout metrics are ridiculously good. Per Player Profiler, his 40-yard dash time, 4.46 seconds, ranks in 100th percentile and his speed score, 131.6, ranks in the 99th percentile. He was drafted in 2015 by the Baltimore Ravens as a wide receiver but transitioned to playing tight end. Oakland’s offensive coordinator, Greg Olson, said Waller is currently the top tight end on the depth chart.

Fantasy Downside
Waller was drafted in 2015 but he has not received much playing time in his career. He was with the Ravens in 2015 and 2016 but only had a total of 12 receptions and 103 yards. Waller was suspended for all of 2017 for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. He was with Oakland last year but was behind Jared Cook on the depth chart. As Cook’s backup, he only had six receptions and 75 yards.

2019 Bottom Line
He does not have a lot of game tape but he certainly has the raw talent and opportunity to break out. 4for4’s John Paulsen has Waller ranked as the TE18. He will likely go undrafted in redraft leagues with limited bench spots but look to add him off the waiver wire if he is able to turn opportunity into fantasy points.
