Scouting report

NO QB Derek Carr - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Derek Carr threw 50 passes in Week 6 against the Texans, completing 32 of them for 353 yards. Still, he only threw one touchdown pass. He has just one game with multiple touchdown passes. The Saints' passing offense just hasn't been all that explosive unless the ball is in the hands of Alvin Kamara or Chris Olave. The only reason Carr is bumped up rankings this week is because six teams are on a bye, so the pool is limited. Still, you can probably find a better option on the waiver wire this week while your main quarterback is on a bye, if that is the case for you.

NO QB Derek Carr - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Houston Texans

Derek Carr actually threw three touchdown passes in last week’s dominating win over the Patriots. Yet he once again threw for less than 200 yards. That’s three games in a row for that. He gets the Texans this week, who haven’t been all that bad on defense this year, especially rookie Will Anderson, who will look to get right in Carr’s face all day. Carr can be a serviceable QB2, but you’re likely to find better options this week, even in the QB2 range.

NO QB Derek Carr - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Green Bay Packers

The highlight for Derek Carr through two weeks is throwing for over 300 yards in Week 1. Otherwise, it hasn't exactly been pretty. Carr has more interceptions (2) than touchdowns (1) to start the season. New Orleans is 2-0 despite Carr's play. This week, it's a good Packers defense. Carr is borderline startable in Superflex leagues until he proves otherwise.

NO QB Derek Carr - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Carolina Panthers

Derek Carr was Derek Carr in his first game as a Saint. Not great but not terrible either. Just enough to keep the offense moving but won’t exactly wow you. That’s fine for a QB2 spot but probably not much more than that. He did throw for over 300 yards in Week 1, so that’s a plus. Carolina should be a bit tougher of a matchup than Tennessee was.

NO QB Derek Carr - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Tennessee Titans

Derek Carr officially makes his Saints debut Sunday against the Titans, a good matchup for Carr and the Saints. The Titans have to prove their worth on defense, especially in the secondary, so the Saints can move the ball on offense. He won't have Alvin Kamara but he does have Chris Olave and Michael Thomas. He's an intriguing sleeper option in daily leagues and worth a low-end QB2 spot if you can start a second quarterback.

NO QB Derek Carr - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
It's going to be weird seeing Derek Carr in a jersey other than a Raiders one, but he is now the quarterback of the Saints. He joins an offense that includes one of the top rookies from 2022, wide receiver Chris Olave, a hopefully healthy Michael Thomas and an interesting option in Rashid Shaheed. If anything, New Orleans should see better production at the quarterback position than they had between Andy Dalton and Jameis Winston last season.

Fantasy Downside
Taysom Hill is still floating around and the Saints still like using him in the red zone, so if the Saints are close to scoring, there's always the chance Carr won't even be on the field to potentially finish off the drive, limiting his fantasy potential. The Saints will also feed the ball to the trio of Alvin Kamara, Jamaal Williams and, maybe sporadically, Kendre Miller.

2023 Bottom Line
Carr should still be a fine QB2 this season. If Michael Thomas can stay healthy, the offense should open up even more for the Saints and Carr. But the constant threat of Taysom Hill and the running backs cap Carr's ceiling.

LV QB Derek Carr - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Derek Carr threw three touchdowns against the Patriots last week, but he was also sacked three times, threw a pick, and was held to 231 passing yards. Carr has been a tough fantasy quarterback to trust week-to-week this year and has surprisingly only thrown for 300 or more yards twice all season.

This week, Carr has a tough matchup against the Steelers, who rank ninth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, and are getting healthier on defense as the season comes to a close. Expect a tough day for the Las Vegas offense, making Carr a low-end QB2 option in most leagues. Look elsewhere if possible.
