Stephanie Stradley on the RB2 situation in Houston: "If Foster can’t go, at least short term I could see Derrick Ward getting more touches than Ben Tate because [HC Gary] Kubiak knows what he can do in regular game action. That’s not to say that Tate doesn’t know his assignments or can’t pass protect, but he hasn’t done it in regular season action. As he proves himself more in game situations, the more opportunities he could get."

RB Steve Slaton returned to practice Tuesday for the first time since before preseason. He’s been out with a hamstring injury. Slaton, who rushed for almost 1,300 yards as a rookie in 2008, was going to be trade material if the first three backs stayed healthy.

Arian Foster is expected to play in the opener against Indianapolis. Derrick Ward and Ben Tate are competing for playing time behind Foster. Because Slaton hasn’t carried the ball, he’ll probably be waived Friday. After his impressive rookie season, Slaton underwent neck surgery, but the emergence of Foster and Ward last season kept him tied to the bench.

Fantasy Impact: 

We're not so sure about Foster's availability given John Clayton's recent comments on Twitter (that Foster "has a tear" and could miss 3-4 weeks), so the Texans may retain Slaton as insurance.

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said the team is still lining up with veteran runner Derrick Ward as their number two back and Ben Tate as number three.

"I could see us playing 3 guys on gameday," Kubiak said.

Fantasy Impact: 

Tate clearly has more potential than Ward should Arian Foster be sidelined for any length of time, but Kubiak could easily keep the veteran involved. Ward can't be entirely dismissed as a low round gamble.

Tweaked hamstring for Houston RB Arian Foster

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said running back Arian Foster "tweaked his hamstring" during Saturday's game in San Francisco against the 49ers.

"We have 15 days, so we’ll just keep our fingers crossed that he recovers," Kubiak said. "We don’t think it’s anything worse than what we were dealing with before. I’m just hoping he’ll be ready for opening day."

Fantasy Impact: 

Kubiak isn't the only one hoping Foster will be ready. The good news is that it doesn't sound like a long-term serious injury. However, hamstrings can be problematic, and owners drafting Foster would be very wise to secure Ben Tate just in case, although Derrick Ward will be in the mix as well. We'll be moving Foster down a couple of spots in the next rankings update coming today. Foster still has the most upside on our board, but Adrian Peterson & Ray Rice are now safer picks.
