Scouting report

BUF RB Devin Singletary - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Rams
It appears even with the drafting of James Cook in the second round, Devin Singletary will remain the No. 1 running back for Buffalo, at least to start the season. The veteran usually gets the nod as the rookie is eased into the NFL and that's the case here.

However, being the No. 1 on a team like Buffalo doesn't necessarily equate to fantasy points as witnessed the last two seasons with the Bills. They are likely to use all three of their backs in the rotation and we really don't know how new OC Ken Dorsey will distribute the ball with them.

If you drafted Singletary as your RB2, you might be disappointed this week against the Rams who were average against the run in 2021. He only ranks as a low-end RB3 or flex depending on your league rosters. It wouldn't be out of the question to keep him on the bench for Week 1.

BUF RB Devin Singletary - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Devin Singletary put up career-highs for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, receptions, and total yardage from scrimmage. One of the reasons for those numbers is he really became the Bills lead back later in the season as Zack Moss lost favor with the Buffalo coaching staff. If he gets more time last season as the lead back, his fantasy numbers would have made him a solid RB2. So, the potential is there to fill that role this season.

2022 Fantasy Downside
A big red flag for Singletary was that the Bills drafted James Cook in the second round. They also brought in veteran Duke Johnson. Although, Singletary should remain the No. 1 back in the pecking order, the chances he get more carries this season significantly decreases. Singletary also had some injury issues that limited him midseason where he only had 96 rushing yards over a four-game stretch. Cook is probably the better receiving back so he could win the third-down back spot in training camp.

2022 Bottom Line
This still appears to be a running back-by-committee situation with Cook taking the spot of Moss in the pecking order. Singletary will still be the lead dog, but you don't take a running back in the second round if you don't think he can contribute right away and also be your lead back down the road. Singletary's numbers are going to go down this year and people are drafting him too high. He doesn't project as a fantasy starter and should only be taken for depth as your fourth back on your roster.

BUF RB Devin Singletary - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Atlanta
Devin Singletary had his second straight game with a touchdown and put up quality fantasy numbers with 17 touches for 78 yards. His snap count was down this week because Zack Moss returned from injury, but the Bills seem to be riding Singletary who has played well.

The Falcons are up next for Buffalo and are ranked 25th in aFPA to running backs. We expect Singletary to have another solid outing with this matchup and the Bills offense playing better.

Start Singletary as a high-end RB2 for Week 17. Expect the touches to be similar to last week (17-20). Buffalo has made it a point to get him involved in the offense.

BUF RB Devin Singletary - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at New England
The Bills actually used their running backs in the running game and it also had them using a featured back which Devin Singletary was the beneficiary. He had season-highs in attempts (22) and rushing yards (86). He also had his first rushing touchdown since Week 10. It helps that Zach Moss is still out again this week.

Singletary faces the Patriots who are ranked 15th in aFPA to running backs. The touches are the key for him to have another good game. In the first meeting with the Pats, he had 10 carries for 36 yards. If he can get 15+ this week, he will have value.

Start Singletary as a low-end RB2 for Week 16. The main concern is how the Bills struggled offensively during the first meeting, but Buffalo might have learned from last week how their running game can help.

BUF RB Devin Singletary - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Carolina

The Bills running backs aren't even involved in the running game. Devin Singletary had only four carries. It did produce 52 yards and he was involved in the passing game where he had six receptions for 37 yards. So, 10 touches for 89 yards isn't a bad fantasy day, especially in PPR leagues. However, Singletary's snaps have been all over the place and last week he had a season-high 82% while Zack Moss had 0.

Buffalo faces the Panthers who are ranked 7th in aFPA to running backs. Moss is expected to get some of his snaps back and Matt Breida is still involved. With an unfavorable matchup and the fact his touches might not even be where they were last week, keep Singletary on the bench for Week 15.

BUF RB Devin Singletary - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Tampa Bay
Devin Singletary had double-digit carries for the second straight game but only rushed for 36 yards. Zack Moss was also back in the picture which will knock Singletary's carries down moving forward.

Singletary will face Tampa Bay who is ranked 12th in aFPA to running backs. The running back situation will go back to where it was during the first half of the season. Moss will be the primary runner while Singletary gets carries and is used more on 3rd downs. With that said, the Bills aren't really committed to the run so keep Singletary on the bench for Week 14.

BUF RB Devin Singletary - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. New England
With Zach Moss out, Devin Singletary moves in to the No. 1 running back spot for Buffalo. Last week, Singletary had 16 touches for 48 yards. He will not be the featured back as Matt Breida will take Moss' touches. The Bills running game has been lackluster most of the season and we don't expect anything to change on Monday night.

Singletary will face the Patriots who are ranked 13th in aFPA to running backs. Because he will get the touches, he carries some fantasy value for Week 13. Start Singletary as an RB3 or flex against New England.
