Falcons sending RB Devonta Freeman to IR

The Atlanta Falcons will place two-time Pro Bowl running back Devonta Freeman on injured reserve with a groin injury, coach Dan Quinn said Tuesday.

"Following the game against Pittsburgh, where Devonta injured his foot, we thought he was just having general soreness in his groin area," Quinn said. "As the week went on, it continued, so we decided to have him get some tests. It has been determined that he will need a procedure that will result in us placing him on injured reserve."

Fantasy Impact: 

With Freeman out, the Falcons now will return to Coleman as the starter with rookie Smith as the backup. Coleman is averaging 3.7 rushing yards per game, while Smith set a franchise rookie record this past weekend by scoring a rushing touchdown in his third consecutive game.

Quinn said Matt Bryant strained his hamstring, he'll likely be out this week as will RB Devonta Freeman with a groin injury.

Fantasy Impact: 

The Falcons play on Monday night in Week 7 so the good news is owners again have plenty of time to prepare. Coleman and Smith will again take over the workload. As for kicker, reports say Tavecchio could see the kicking duties.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (foot, groin, out) missed practice all week and is out for Week 6. Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith will once again share the backfield. From Week 2 to Week 4, Coleman saw 54 touches for 249 yards and a touchdown, while Smith garnered 25 touches for 137 yards and a touchdown. Coleman is a high-end RB2 in this matchup with Smith is more of a RB3/flex option.

Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (foot) missed practice again Thursday. Freeman looks doubtful for Week 6, so look for Tevin Coleman and Ito Smith to serve as the Falcons’ RB1 and RB2. Coleman is on the RB1/RB2 fringe while Smith is a decent RB3/flex option.
