IND TE Jack Doyle - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Tennessee Titans

Jack Doyle caught only one pass on two targets for 20 yards last week against the Chargers. Jacoby Brissett sent only 22% of his pass attempts to the tight end position in Week 1, which isn’t a good sign for a team that boasts two players at the position who have been viable starters in the past. The Titans gave up a touchdown to David Njoku last week, but it’s hard to trust Doyle or fellow Colts tight end Eric Ebron until we see production with Brissett at the helm. Doyle should stay on waivers.

IND TE Jack Doyle - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Los Angeles Chargers

Jack Doyle struggled through injuries last season and wound up with only 26 catches for 245 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He’s second on the depth chart behind Eric Ebron, but the Colts have used two-tight end sets effectively for much of the past several years. Doyle might miss Andrew Luck, but he already has a nice rapport with a Jacoby Brissett. When Brissett was the quarterback in 2017, Doyle caught 80 balls for 690 yards and four touchdowns.

Doyle begins the season against the Chargers, who were average against the tight end position last year. While he may not get the red zone looks that Ebron does, he still has upside in deep leagues as a streaming option. We have him ranked as a low-end TE2, with a wait-and-see approach on the Colts tight ends, but gambling fantasy owners might think the tight end is the better way to attack a defense that’s missing Derwin James for the season. He’s a risky streaming option with upside.

IND TE Jack Doyle - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Jack Doyle was banged up last season, but in the six games he did play, he was fairly productive. He averaged 5.5 targets per game and caught six balls for 70 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders in late October. Doyle has been good as a part-time player in the past, including 80 catches for 690 yards and four touchdowns in 2017. Quarterback Andrew Luck has always used the tight end position effectively, giving Doyle tremendous upside if he can stay on the field this year.

Fantasy Downside

Doyle missed 10 games last year and one game the year before. He’s only 29, but it’s always concerning to see players get nicked up. Additionally, Doyle will be competing with Eric Ebron for snaps and targets. Ebron was excellent last year. While multiple tight ends have been able to produce in the past with Andrew Luck; and the Colts run multiple tight end sets, it’s rarely good to be the second most productive player on the team at your own position if you’re a tight end. Further complicating things is the additions of Devin Funchess in free agency and Parris Campbell in the draft. The Colts may spread teams out a little more with three and four-receiver sets.

2019 Bottom Line

Doyle is a calculated risk in the 13th round of 12-team leagues. If he’s healthy, he’s likely to outproduce that draft slot and he’s going after guys like Greg Olsen and Jimmy Graham who also have big question marks. The Colts will use Doyle when he’s on the field, and he’s worth grabbing at the end of drafts for owners who decide not to put a lot of draft capital into the position.

IND TE Jack Doyle - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Miami Dolphins

The Colts come off another strong offensive performance against the Titans, and this week, Indianapolis has the highest implied team total on the Sunday slate, nearing 30 expected points. Miami ranks just 25th in aFPA to TEs this season as well. As an undisputed top-two target in this offense with a quarterback that has thrown at least three touchdown passes in seven consecutive games, Jack Doyle is a solid TE1 in Week 12.

IND TE Jack Doyle - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Tennesee Titans

The Colts have a high implied team total of 25 at home against Tennessee, and maybe the best offensive line in the NFL right now, helping the Colts air attack by protecting Andrew Luck better than he's ever been protected. This week against a pass funnel Titans defense that ranks second in aFPA to RBs, tight ends Eric Ebron and Jack Doyle should do well, despite the Titans top ranking in aFPA to TEs. Target volume and red zone usage are what matter here at the thinnest of fantasy positions. Doyle is still playing far more snaps than Ebron, but Ebron's ability to find the end zone cannot be denied at this point. Consider both TE1s in Week 11.

IND TE Jack Doyle - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

The Colts have a middle-of-the-road implied team total against the Jaguars this week, and Jacksonville ranks 9th in aFPA to TEs. T.Y. Hilton is expected to see shadow coverage from Jalen Ramsey. This could funnel more targets to Colts TEs. Jack Doyle showed before the bye week that he's still an end zone part of this offense, significantly out-snapping and out-targeting Eric Ebron. With the state of the fantasy TE position, Doyle should be owned and started in pretty much every league, unless the person with Jack Doyle owns Zach Ertz and Travis Kelce too.

IND TE Jack Doyle - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Philadelphia Eagles

With Andrew Luck back, T.Y. Hilton is again a target machine (11 each of the past two weeks); however, Jack Doyle is the second option in this offense, with 15 targets on the season. He's played more than 90 percent of snaps in both games, but his status needs to be monitored. Doyle missed practice both Wednesday and Thursday with a hip injury. If he does play, consider him a low-end TE1 based on his playing time, QB and the Eagles ranking 19th in PPR points allowed to TEs.
