Fantasy Upside
Dalton Schultz is now a member of the Houston Texans, taking the bulk of the 89 vacated tight end targets for the Cowboys with him. Jake Ferguson stands to be the main beneficiary, as the leading receiving option at the tight-end spot. Ferguson caught 145 passes for Wisconsin during his college career. If the Cowboys continue to use the tight end around the red zone, after sitting 11th in red zone tight end targets over the last three seasons, then Ferguson has a chance to make a name for himself as a weekly option at fantasy football's most volatile spot.
Fantasy Downside
Just like most of the secondary pass catchers in this offense, Ferguson might struggle to see targets if the Cowboys go as run-heavy as Mike McCarthy seems to be threatening. Ferguson is not likely to see a target share that makes him a "must-start" on a weekly basis and will be banking on touchdowns to make him fantasy relevant.
2023 Bottom Line
Late-round tight ends are a lottery almost all of the time. Ferguson is now different, except that he has a clear path to playing time, and potentially a ready-made role for fantasy success. But he'll likely need to show something early in the season before he should be considered a weekly fixture in fantasy lineups.
