JAX RB James Robinson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tennessee Titans
After a troubling start to the season, James Robinson has regained control of the Jacksonville backfield in a decisive fashion. Carlos Hyde was surprisingly inactive in Week 4, leading to a season-high 18 carries for Robinson, including a six-yard touchdown run. On the downside, Robinson only saw two targets, catching one of them for negative yardage. Robinson's touch total has increased from eight in Week 1 to 14, 21, and 19 in Weeks 2-4. The upward trend means Robinson can be started as a solid RB2 in fantasy lineups, including in a decent Week 5 matchup against a poor Tennessee defense. Despite the chaos engulfing the Jags' season, Robinson remains a viable fantasy starter and the sole reliable asset in Jacksonville.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Cincinnati Bengals
After a troubling Week 1 workload, James Robinson's role the past two weeks has been very encouraging for his RB2 prospects. Robinson received 21 of the Jaguars' 29 RB touches in Week 3, turning 15 carries and six receptions into 134 total yards and a touchdown. It helped Robinson that Jacksonville was actually able to keep the game competitive against Arizona, resulting in more rushing attempts than expected for the second-year back. It is clear at this point that while Robinson might not receive the massive volume he saw in 2020, he is firmly ahead of Carlos Hyde in the pecking order and should receive virtually all of the high-value RB touches in this offense. A Week 4 date with the middling Bengals defense is nothing to be afraid of. Robinson can be started as a solid RB2 or flex this week.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Arizona Cardinals
James Robinson's Week 2 was far more encouraging than his Week 1 performance from a usage standpoint. While Robinson largely split backfield work with Carlos Hyde in Week 1, in Week 2 he handled 14 of 16 backfield touches. At least for the moment, it looks like Robinson is poised to lead the Jacksonville backfield again this season, but the value of that role is up in the air given how bad the Jags offense has been so far. Robinson projects better in matchups like the one he has on deck for Week 3 against a high-powered Arizona offense that will force the Jags to keep pace. Robinson's domination of the passing down work gives him a workable floor in PPR formats, but Lawrence has been much more reluctant to check down than the quarterback carousel in Duval County last season. Robinson is startable as a flex in PPR leagues, but hoping for his RB1 production from last season is wishful thinking at this point.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Denver Broncos
Week 1 was disappointing for managers who started James Robinson as their RB2 and the peripheral numbers were not promising for his future prospects. Robinson played 46 snaps to Carlos Hyde's 25, but Robinson only saw five carries compared to eight for Hyde. Robinson did get most of the backfield targets (six to two in favor of Robinson), but with the Jacksonville offense looking rough as a whole, such a limited workload will not produce RB2 numbers very often. Now the Jags will host a strong Broncos defense that dismantled the Giants offense in their opener. At this point, Robinson is best thought of as a decent flex option rather than the RB2 we thought he would be heading into Week 1, and one who is a better play when the Jags will likely face a negative game script and be forced to pass.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 @ Houston Texans
Travis Etienne's season-ending foot injury vaulted James Robinson back into the high-end RB2 range in fantasy drafts, and he now projects to carry another heavy workload for the Jags in 2021. Robinson displayed a versatile skill set as an undrafted rookie. He handled 240 carries and 49 receptions in 2020, turning that into 1,414 total yards and 10 total touchdowns (finishing as the fantasy RB7 in half-PPR formats). Robinson will be hard-pressed to repeat his league-winning performance from 2020 this season, but Etienne's injury means he is back to being a surefire starting option for fantasy managers, including for a Week 1 matchup against the lowly Texans. Robinson's multi-dimensional role and the favorable matchup give him a solid RB2 floor in Week 1 with upside for more.

JAX RB James Robinson - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
According to Fantasy Football World Championship average draft position data (via SI.com), James Robinson was the 46th running back drafted (112.1) in 2020. He was drafted after players like Sony Michel, Chris Thompson, Alexander Mattison, Boston Scott, Chase Edmonds, Latavius Murray, Matt Breida and Jordan Howard. He went on to finish seventh in fantasy points among running backs, averaging 17.9 points per game. His 250 points were just nine fewer points than the running back he replaced in Jacksonville, Leonard Fournette, in 2019. Robinson ranked second among rookies with 1,414 scrimmage -- the most scrimmage yards by an undrafted rookie in the common-draft era -- and became the fourth undrafted rookie with at least 1,000 rushing yards since 1967. He added 10 touchdowns and averaged 4.5 yards per carry, so his rookie year was a rousing success by every standard.

Fantasy Downside
The hard truth is, even if Robinson starts the season No. 1 on the depth chart. Trevor Lawrence is will likely have an eye for Travis Etienne. The former college teammates could form a solid battery in the short-passing game.

2021 Bottom Line
While there are questions beyond the Lawrence-Etienne duo -- like a new coaching staff and scheme, expecting Robinson to play a prominent role, especially with Lawrence trying to work his way up to speed, is plenty reasonable. Also reasonable? Expecting RB2/RB3 production as you plot your draft strategy.

JAX RB James Robinson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Indianapolis Colts
After missing last week’s game with an ankle injury, James Robinson is hoping to play one more game this season. In his first game as a pro versus the Colts, he totaled 90 yards and would be a boost to the Jaguars' offense if he can play on Sunday.
