Scouting report

MIA RB Jeff Wilson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Buffalo Bills

Jeff Wilson left last week's matchup with a hip injury and didn't return. When he played, he ran four times for 26 yards on eight snaps. Wilson missed practice on Tuesday and Wednesday before getting in a limited session on Thursday. Even if Wilson is active, he'll be injured playing a tough Bills defense in a blizzard. His health will be worth monitoring, but as of now we'd consider Wilson to be too much of a risk for Week 15.

MIA RB Jeff Wilson - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Los Angeles Chargers

Jeff Wilson's revenge game did not go as planned last week. Wilson ran the ball just once for three yards and didn't catch either of his two targets, resulting in one touch on 17 offensive snaps (37%). Wilson was out-carried by Raheem Mostert (7-1) for the first time since he joined the Dolphins. The Dolphins fell down in the score last week, so they relied more on the pass game than the run game, plus it was a tough matchup against the 49ers. Wilson should get back on track this week in a favorable matchup vs. the Chargers (30th aFPA). We like Wilson as a strong RB2 play for Week 14.

MIA RB Jeff Wilson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at San Francisco 49ers

Raheem Mostert was inactive last week, so Jeff Wilson appeared headed for a huge game. He wasn't terrible, but Wilson only finished with 39 rushing yards and 13 receiving yards on one catch. He did score a touchdown, though, which he's now done in all three games with Miami. This week, Wilson gets a Revenge Game against the 49ers, which sounds nice on paper, but isn't that great. The 49ers have given up the 2nd-fewest average fantasy points to running backs this season, including a league-low 644 rushing yards to the position. Miami also could potentially get Mostert back this week, which would impact Wilson's touches. If Mostert is inactive, Wilson will be an RB2 play, but if Mostert plays, Wilson slips more into a high RB3 option.

MIA RB Jeff Wilson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Houston Texans

Jeff Wilson made his presence felt in his Dolphins debut in Week 9, and only expanded on it in Week 10 ahead of Miami's bye week. Wilson ran a team-high 17 times for 119 yards and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 24 yards on five targets. He also played on 61% of the offensive snaps, which was notably more than Raheem Mostert's 28%. Wilson should continue to be in line for plenty of touches in Week 12 against the Jets. Not only does he have an extra week of preparation, but Mostert (knee) has been sidelined at practice this week. He also faces a Texans defense that's given up the most average fantasy points to opposing running backs. Wilson is already a strong start if Mostert plays, but he'll enter RB1 territory if Mostert is unable to go.

MIA RB Jeff Wilson - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Cleveland Browns

Jeff Wilson being traded to the Dolphins felt like a quiet deal, but the newly acquired running back made a huge impact in his first game with Miami. Wilson actually played one more offensive snap than Raheem Mostert, and was pretty productive with nine carries for 51 yards and three receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown on three targets. Wilson and Mostert each had nine rushing attempts, but Wilson was the only Dolphins' RB with a target in Week 9. This should be a pretty evenly split backfield moving forward, which makes Wilson a solid RB3/flex option. That's the range he'll be in for Week 10 as he draws a favorable matchup vs. the Browns (27th aFPA).

MIA RB Jeff Wilson - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Chicago Bears

Jeff Wilson was shipped to the Dolphins this week after Miami traded away Chase Edmonds. Wilson reunites with coach Mike McDaniel, so he'll have a somewhat decent grasp on this offense. Still, it's his first game with a brand new team, so starting him would be a risk. Plus, Edmonds had a pretty limited role as the backup in this offense, so there may not be many touches for Wilson. We'll wait and see just how the touches are split in this offense between Wilson and Raheem Mostert. For Week 9, though, Wilson should be viewed as a desperation flex play at best.

SF RB Jeff Wilson - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Jeff Wilson had his first real down game last week since taking over as the starter for the injured Elijah Mitchell. Wilson was held to just 25 yards on seven carries as the 49ers trailed for much of the game.

This week, expect Wilson to get back on track against a Chiefs defense that ranks 24th in aFPA to opposing running backs. There’s risk again for the 49ers to get down early, but Wilson’s workload has been consistent up until last week, and we still project RB2 numbers for him in this matchup.

Update: The trade for Christian McCaffrey throws everything out the window for the rest of the San Francisco running backs. Wilson still has some deep-league upside this week in a nice matchup, but if McCaffrey is active for his first game as a 49er, then it'll be hard to bank on Wilson getting enough work to be a solid fantasy back. Watch for McCaffrey's status, since he was traded so late in the week, but it doesn't look good for Wilson managers, and it's best to have a backup plan in place now.
