CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Green Bay Packers

Justin Fields finally scored a touchdown in one of his starts, but he still didn't do a whole lot. Fields finished with 111 passing yards, and ran just three times for four yards. He also finished with 20 pass attempts, a number he hasn't surpassed in a game this year. It's hard to trust Fields as a fantasy option considering he's doing so little. He's averaged under 10 completions per game in his three starts for 129.3 yards with one total touchdown. He isn't even doing much on the ground, averaging under 10 rushing yards per game in his starts. We could see more from Fields on the ground this week with Damien Williams out, but that's just a guess. He gets an OK matchup against the Packers this week, a team allowing the 19th most schedule-adjusted fantasy points to quarterbacks. But Fields is a bottom-10 QB option in Week 6.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Las Vegas Raiders

Justin Fields played better from a performance standpoint last week, but from a fantasy standpoint he didn't do a whole lot. He only threw the ball 17 times, finishing with 209 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. He also only had nine yards on three rushing attempts. We expected a higher rushing floor from Fields, who has only rushed six times for 21 yards in his two starts. Perhaps he gets more designed runs called in the near future with starting RB David Montgomery sidelined. Still, Fields hasn't shown a lot in his first two starts that would make him someone you'd start with confidence in fantasy. He gets an OK matchup against the Raiders this week, but he's still outside the top 20 options at QB in Week 5.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Detroit Lions

Justin Fields made his first NFL start last week, and it was awful. Like, historically bad. The rookie completed just 6-of-20 passes for 68 yards with no touchdowns and added just 12 yards on three carries. Fields was also sacked nine times, which is relevant in leagues that punish you for that. Fields looked bad in his outing in Week 2 when he played 65% of the offensive snaps following Andy Dalton's injury. It's hard to imagine Fields having another performance as bad as this, but he's a hard quarterback to trust at the moment. He's outside of our top 20 quarterbacks for the week despite a favorable matchup against the Lions.

CHI QB Justin Fields - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns

Justin Fields finally gets his start at quarterback, although it's only temporary as Andy Dalton deals with an injury. Fields saw some playing time last week (42 of 65 snaps) and frankly looked awful. He completed 6-of-13 passes for 60 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. A positive takeaway, however, is Fields finished with 10 rushing attempts for 31 yards. 10 carries out of 42 snaps is pretty solid, and his rushing stats will provide a solid floor to make up for any miscues as a passer. Fields gets a favorable matchup in his first start, facing a Browns defense that allowed the third-most fantasy points to QBs in 2020. Fields will be a solid streaming option this week as a mid-range QB.

CHI QB Justin Fields - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Justin Fields is a talented rookie who has talents beyond throwing. He averaged around 10 rushing attempts per game while at Ohio State, and we’d expect him to mix his rushing ability into the mix while at Chicago. You can expect a floor of around 20 yards per game through his legs. Fields is also a talented passer, and he landed in a solid offense. He has a star WR1 in Allen Robinson (WR12 last year in half-PPR), a receiving threat at running back in Tarik Cohen and two rising stars in Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet. If he’s able to develop quickly, he offers plenty of promise in 2021.

Fantasy Downside
The Bears have stated repeatedly that Andy Dalton is their starting quarterback. It’s hard to imagine Chicago going to the entire season with Dalton, but the uncertainty makes Fields a risky option, especially if you want to start him. Aside from that, rookie quarterbacks are a gamble anyways. Some can shine, like Justin Herbert last year, but others struggle to get going in their first year like Dwayne Haskins in 2019.

2021 Bottom Line
Fields has a lot of things going for him, but he carries too much risk to view him as someone you’ll draft as your QB1. He likely won’t be starting in Week 1, and it’s impossible to know when he actually will start. And even when he does start, it may take some time before he starts producing. View Fields as a backup QB option who could emerge into your QB1 as the season progresses.
