Fantasy Upside
Justin Fields is a talented rookie who has talents beyond throwing. He averaged around 10 rushing attempts per game while at Ohio State, and we’d expect him to mix his rushing ability into the mix while at Chicago. You can expect a floor of around 20 yards per game through his legs. Fields is also a talented passer, and he landed in a solid offense. He has a star WR1 in Allen Robinson (WR12 last year in half-PPR), a receiving threat at running back in Tarik Cohen and two rising stars in Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet. If he’s able to develop quickly, he offers plenty of promise in 2021.
Fantasy Downside
The Bears have stated repeatedly that Andy Dalton is their starting quarterback. It’s hard to imagine Chicago going to the entire season with Dalton, but the uncertainty makes Fields a risky option, especially if you want to start him. Aside from that, rookie quarterbacks are a gamble anyways. Some can shine, like Justin Herbert last year, but others struggle to get going in their first year like Dwayne Haskins in 2019.
2021 Bottom Line
Fields has a lot of things going for him, but he carries too much risk to view him as someone you’ll draft as your QB1. He likely won’t be starting in Week 1, and it’s impossible to know when he actually will start. And even when he does start, it may take some time before he starts producing. View Fields as a backup QB option who could emerge into your QB1 as the season progresses.
