Entering his third season out of Texas, the strong-legged Justin Tucker has emerged as one of the best young kickers in the NFL. Coming off a Pro Bowl season last year, Tucker was one of the few bright spots for the Ravens during a disappointing 2013 season. He finished the year making 38 of 41 field goal attempts including seven shots from beyond 50 yards.
Fantasy Upside
Tucker is great from distance with a very strong leg. He made 18 field goals from beyond 40 yards last year, including a 61 yarder. He’s also accurate, as he’s made nearly 92 percent of his career attempts, and he tied for the lead in field goal attempts last season. With improvements to the Ravens offense, he could very well repeat his performance from last year.
Fantasy Downside
The Ravens offense was worse in 2013 than it was in 2012, and Tucker only had 33 field goal attempts in 2012 compared to 41 last year. If the Ravens offense improves this season as expected, it’s very possible that the offensive efficiency could have the opposite effect on Tucker’s field goal attempts, making his fantasy value decrease.
Bottom Line
Tucker doesn’t have the long term career track record to be considered amongst the very best at the position yet, but he’s well on his way and we have him ranked just outside the top 10 for fantasy kickers. We expect a regression back closer to his first season totals and the Ravens offense to do a little better job moving the ball and taking advantage of red zone opportunities. With that in mind, we’ve been a little conservative with Tucker. He’s not a bad option when you’re drafting in the last round however, and kickers are such a crapshoot that at least this one is in no danger of losing his job.
