Scouting report

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - Week 5, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tampa Bay
Kelvin Benjamin had only 39 yards on three catches last week against the Falcons, but he managed to find the end zone and remains an excellent red zone threat with the size advantage he has over most defensive backs. Benjamin now has four touchdowns so far this season and should be counted on as a borderline WR1 moving forward.

He has a great matchup against the Bucs this week, who have allowed the fifth most passing touchdowns to opposing teams this season, averaging 2.25 per game. Even if Derek Anderson ends up getting the start, Benjamin should get enough targets to be a solid fantasy option and he should be active in all league formats.

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - Week 4, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Atlanta
After a great first two games, Benjamin was held to one target and no catches against the Vikings last week. While alarming for Benjamin owners, QB Cam Newton has stated he won’t let that happen again this week. The Minnesota defense is very good, and the Panthers struggled to move the ball. Benjamin should be fine moving forward as the primary WR for the Panthers.

This week should give him a great chance to rebound. The Falcons just gave up 376 passing yards and three touchdowns to Drew Brees on Monday night, and only Detroit has given up as many touchdown passes as the Atlanta defense so far this year. Expect a nice bounce-back game from Benjamin, and he should be active as a borderline WR1 in all leagues.

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Minnesota
So much for rust after missing last season. Kelvin Benjamin followed up a solid Week 1 performance with seven catches, 108 yards and two touchdowns against the 49ers last week. He was targeted a team-high nine times and looks like he’s going to continue to be the primary target in the Panthers passing attack.

This week, Benjamin faces a tough defense, as Minnesota has allowed only 6.3 yards per pass attempt through two games and held Aaron Rodgers to only 213 yards, a touchdown and a pick last week. However, Packers top WR Jordy Nelson still managed to gain 73 yards and a touchdown in a Green Bay loss, so Benjamin should still get his looks. He’s a borderline WR1 this week and should be active in all leagues.

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - Week 2, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco

Kelvin Benjamin had a great first game back after missing all of last season with an injury. He was targeted a team-high 12 times and ended up with six receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. Cam Newton looked to Benjamin early and often and it seemed like the two picked up right where they left off at the end of the 2014 season.

This week, Benjamin should put up borderline WR1 numbers against the 49ers. The Rams were terrible last week, but Kenny Britt found some space against the San Francisco CBs, and Benjamin shouldn’t have a problem putting up numbers against them. He should be active in all leagues.

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - Week 1, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Denver
Kelvin Benjamin missed all of last season with a knee injury, so it's easy to forget he caught 73 passes for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie in 2014. He’s a big, physical player who can win jump balls and chase after balls that first appear to be overthrown.

Benjamin might take a little bit to get going this year as he tries to return from such a devastating knee injury, but he should remain the WR1 on a Panthers team that badly needs him. That said, he'll be a risky start this week as he's still getting up to speed and will face last year’s top defense in passing yards allowed. While you might not have any other options, this might be a good week to sit Benjamin if you can.

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

With little competition on the roster, Kelvin Benjamin should step right back into the WR1 role on a Panthers team that created 35 passing touchdowns last season, tied for third in the league. Benjamin is a big target who can go up and get overthrown balls, which makes him an ideal fit for quarterback Cam Newton, who tends to sail some passes over the heads of his receivers. Benjamin had a great rookie season in 2014, catching 73 passes for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns, and Carolina will be hoping that Benjamin can come back strong and lead their receiving corps.

Fantasy Downside

Drops were an issue for Benjamin during his rookie year, and he’ll need to shore up his hands if he’s going to produce at WR1 numbers on a consistent basis. Additionally, you never know how a guy is going to be coming off a knee injury, although explosiveness off the line and deep speed has never been part of what makes Benjamin a good receiver. His health status and his ability to avoid a delayed sophomore slump will be what determine if he can take the next step in what will effectively be his second season as a pro.

2016 Bottom Line

Benjamin is a risky option, but he has excellent upside in all league formats. He’s big, physical, and has already demonstrated the ability to produce at the NFL level. His injury makes him more of a WR2 option in most fantasy leagues, but he could wind up being a steal if that proves not to be an issue for him. He’s going in the fourth round in most leagues right now, which is just about right for a guy that lands in the top 25 in our receiver rankings.

CAR WR Kelvin Benjamin - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

The Panthers seem to have found their next WR1 with Kelvin Benjamin, last year’s first round pick out of Florida State. Benjamin put up strong numbers as a rookie last season, hauling in 73 passes for 1,008 yards and nine touchdowns. He was a strong red zone target for Carolina, and he managed to be successful despite quarterback Cam Newton playing hurt for a good part of the year behind a horrid offensive line. The Panthers will hope Benjamin can build on his successful rookie season as they try to take the NFC South again in 2015.

Fantasy Upside
Benjamin is a monster of a man. At 6’5, 245lbs, he has the requisite size to win jump balls and to make a big impact in the red zone. He showed the ability to come strong off the line, helping him overcome press coverage in a way that many slow footed big receivers struggle with when they enter the league. Benjamin is young and growing with a franchise caliber quarterback and he has the kind of catching radius that helps quarterbacks out.

Fantasy Downside
Drops were an issue in his rookie season, and the Panthers will hope he can resolve some of those issues. Benjamin also lacks blazing speed, though he still managed to average respectable 13.8 yards per catch last year. Benjamin also may have some of his targets eaten into by rookie Devin Funchess, and veteran tight end Greg Olsen remains an elite pass catcher on the team.

Bottom Line
Benjamin has some flaws in his game and some concerns, but as the top receiver on the Panthers’ depth chart for the foreseeable future and coming off a season when he was targeted 146 time (7th most in the league), he seems to have a pretty high floor. He’s a solid WR2 option in all weeks and will even put up elite numbers from time to time. His value is pretty high right now, so you’ll have to give up a good pick to get him, but he seems unlikely to suffer a sophomore slump based on opportunity alone.
