DeMarco Murray

Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray (hand) did not practice Wednesday. Murray participated in individual drills, though the official report says that he didn’t practice. Given his return, even in a limited fashion, it looks as if Murray is on track to play in Week 16. His workload may be limited somewhat to avoid hits on that left hand, but he should be out there for fantasy owners. He should also be able to run to the right effectively, though his stiff-arm in either direction may not be available. When he runs to the left, he may have to carry the ball in his right hand, increasing the likelihood of a fumble. The defense will certainly be aware of his injury and try to force a fumble. The Cowboys would be wise to utilize Joseph Randle in the running game and especially Lance Dunbar in the passing game since Murray's ability to catch the ball may be somewhat limited. But if he's active, he's pretty much a must-start given his production this season.

Cowboys beat writer Todd Archer: DeMarco Murray in uniform on practice field but not expected to so much. Has extra protection on his left hand... Murray just caught a pass during pat and go warmups. Kinda used both hands to make the grab... Joseph Randle took the first team snaps in on air drills, not Murray... DeMarco Murray going through all of the individual drills.

Fantasy Impact:

Beat writer Brandon George answered a question about the Cowboys offense passing more if DeMarco Muarry doesn't play:

George: I think you'd see more of Tony Romo without Murray. But I don't think they'd get totally away from the run game. Joseph Randle and Lance Dunbar are good enough to do well behind this offensive line. Randle has had several big runs of late and would be fine against a Colts team that struggles against the run.

Fantasy Impact: 

If anything, the Colts may be able to play a bit more balanced and do more to prevent WR Dez Bryant from hurting them without Murray in the lineup. George added in his Q & A that he "would doubt [Murray will] practice fully at any point this week. Other running backs have come right back and played with this injury. No reason to think Murray couldn't do the same."

DeMarco Murray to have surgery on hand

Stephen Jones tells @1053thefan Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray will have surgery today on broken bone in his hand.

Fantasy Impact: 

Per the tweet, Murray is not ruled out for next week - at least not yet. Jones was quoted in a story as saying, "It's probably a tough expectation to think that he can [play], but we'll see." Jones made it seem like even if he responds well to surgery, it may be a long shot Murray suits up in a friendly matchup at home with the Colts. Joseph Randle is averaging 7.0 YPC on 34 carries thus far this season, and is the favorite to take over most of Murray's carries. Lance Dunbar is the better pass-catcher, so he'd likely take on most of Murray's work in the receiving game. If Murray misses the game, Randle would likely be ranked in the top 20-25 in standard formats, while Dunbar would have some PPR appeal.

4th metacarpal fractures can be difficult to return from due to the potential swelling from both the fracture and from the surgery to address the fracture. Location is also important as well, as often times metacarpal fractures are addressed non-operatively. My first guess is that they are going to pin the fracture to allow it to heal properly. The metacarpals are really important in the hand to help with gripping activities, so the concern here is his ability to grip the football.

I'm not sure it's realistic to assume Murray will be back from hand surgery this Sunday, but stranger things have happened. The severity of the fracture and what type of procedure they perform will ultimately determine his availability this week and moving forward. If he does play, he'll have heavy padding around the fracture to help reduce the load on the fracture, with the option to primarily use just his right hand for carrying the ball.
