Pierre Thomas almost certainly will miss Sunday

New Orleans Saints tailback Pierre Thomas almost certainly will miss Sunday's opener against Detroit after being held out of team drills again Thursday.

Thomas, who suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee three weeks ago, dressed for practice and participated in some individual drills, but he wasn't healthy enough to go full speed.

"I was hoping we'd get more from him today," said Saints Coach Sean Payton, who said Thomas didn't have to be "100 percent" healed in order to play, but he "has to be better than the other back that's potentially dressing in his place."

"The key is getting to where it's comfortable enough to where he's not just practicing and able to plant on it, but he's effectively able to do that better than another player," Payton said.

If Thomas can't play, most of his snaps will likely go to tailback Mike Bell, who would split time in the backfield with starter Reggie Bush, and second-year pro Lynell Hamilton likely would be activated as the third tailback.

Bush, Thomas sit out of practice

Tailbacks Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas were both held out of team drills in practice Wednesday. Thomas (knee) will not play in Saturday's preseason game at Oakland, and Bush (calf) is questionable.

Thomas, who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during last week's preseason game at Houston, said earlier this week that the injury was minor, and he expected to be back on the practice field within a day or two. But the pain has apparently lingered.

Payton said his goal is to get Thomas some snaps in the final preseason game against Miami next Thursday night to get him up to speed. Thomas' snaps were limited in the first two preseason games while the team spent more time evaluating backup tailbacks Lynell Hamilton, Mike Bell, Herb Donaldson and P.J. Hill.

Bush has been limited all week because of the calf strain he suffered during practice last Thursday in Houston. Payton said Bush is "making progress," but said the injury is "somewhat like a hamstring. You just have to be careful."

With Deuce Mcallister no longer around, the Saints are looking for a bruising RB to lead the way in key short-yardage situations.
Four players are vying for one or possibly two roster spots with Mike Bell, Lynell Hamilton, P.J. Hill and Herb Donaldson fighting for the jobs.

McAllister, the Saints' career rushing leader was released after last season.

"I'm anxious to see all of those guys," Saints HC Payton said. "It's hard to get them all work. You'll see in practice that we'll start clumping two or three of them in a nine-on-seven and not try to give each one of them two reps but try to give one of them a little bit more work. That gives us a better chance to look at those players."

Bell likely holds the edge for at least the third spot since he is No. 3 on the depth chart. He signed with the Saints as a free agent in November after being waived by the Texans in August.

Observations from Saints morning practice

My "Who's Hot" award from Friday morning's practice goes to fourth-year RB Mike Bell, who flashed an impressive amount of speed and quickness for a 230-pound back.

Granted, they aren't doing any live tackling out there, so the running backs all look good as they breeze through the defense. But Bell in particular stood out on several runs.

Bell has really been the forgotten man in all of the offseason running back talk, with so much attention being paid to bulked-up starter Pierre Thomas and younger backups Lynell Hamilton, P.J. Hill and Herb Donaldson. But Bell looks like the clear front-runner for that #3 TB/power back role.
