Bears say RB Forte does not have high ankle sprain

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith said Monday that RB Matt Forte does not have a high ankle sprain, and while he didn't go into specifics, he did say Forte is still sore, which is why the Bears brought back Kahlil Bell.

Forte was injured during Thursday's 23-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and multiple outlets reported it was a high ankle sprain, which usually keeps a player sidelined longer than a normal sprain.

"Matt did go down with an ankle injury. It's not a high ankle sprain, as has been reported," Smith said on WBBM (780-AM). "But right now, you know when you don't finish the game and he still has some soreness, we'll continue to monitor it, but we felt we needed another running back here, that's why we brought back a guy who knows our system and has played good ball for us in Kahlil Bell."

Fantasy Impact: 

It's good news for owners because high ankle sprains can sideline a player for weeks. Forte is still sore, and the team didn't want to speculate when he would return. He'll have a few extra days to rest for Week 3 against the Rams at home, but owners should back themselves up in case he can't go. Michael Bush is a likely fill in with Bell also getting some action.

The Bears believe running back Matt Forte suffered a high ankle sprain Thursday night vs. Green Bay, per source.

Fantasy Impact: 

This is obviously a big blow to Forte and his owners. The typical recovery time (assuming Forte's injury is stable, and doesn't require surgery) is six weeks, so that would possibly have him back for Week 7. Provided Michael Bush can stay healthy, we would not expect Forte to return before the team's Week 6 bye. Bush becomes a low end RB1 in the short term. Over a 10-game span in 2011 as a Raider, he averaged 116 total yards and 0.5 TDs with Darren McFadden sidelined. Don't cut Forte unless the news gets much worse -- he might make it back for the final 11 games of the season.

When he weighed his options — begrudgingly accepting that he wouldn’t land a massive contract befitting a starting tailback — Bears RB Michael Bush wanted an NFL home where he could work and win.

So when he arrived at Halas Hall for a free-agent visit, Bush was fascinated when new offensive coordinator Mike Tice informed him that he wanted two 1,000-yard running backs.

Fantasy Impact: 

Don't read too much into this -- it was probably just Tice doing his best car salesman job trying to convince Bush to sign on the dotted line. It is something to keep in mind, however, when comparing Forte to players with more predictable workloads, like Chris Johnson, Darren McFadden and DeMarco Murray.

Raiders won't “baby” Darren McFadden

With Michael Bush moving on in free agency, the Raiders are counting on McFadden this season. Head coach Dennis Allen told our "NFL AM" crew that McFadden, who turns 25 next week, is healthy and the team has no intention of babying him this season.

"He's 100 percent," Allen said of McFadden. "He's been extremely explosive throughout camp and in the preseason. He's very vital to our offense and giving our offense a chance to be explosive and keeping defenses honest. So we're going to have to be able to keep him healthy and use him throughout the year.

"I think the thing that you look at is as a running back, I mean, it's a tough position. They take some shots and that's part of football. We can't baby him. We can't protect him. We got to go out there and play football and give him an opportunity to carry the ball, and we hope that he's able to stay healthy."

Fantasy Impact: 

If McFadden plays a full season, he'll finish as a top 5 RB. His problem has always been staying healthy. It's tougher to draft McFadden now that his insurance, Michael Bush, has left town, but he certainly worth consideration in the back half of the 1st round.
