SF RB Elijah Mitchell - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Elijah Mitchell hasn’t been active since Week 1, and now he has Christian McCaffrey to contend with for snaps. Jeff Wilson is now in Miami, however, so Mitchell should step into the complementary role. Still, fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach with Mitchell until we see how this backfield is going to shake out. Add him in deeper formats though, if he was dropped earlier in the season.

SF RB Elijah Mitchell - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Chicago Bears

Elijah Mitchell was very good when he was on the field last year, rushing for 963 yards on 4.7 yards per carry to go with five touchdowns. He also added 19-137-1 in the passing game. However, Mitchell was held to only 10 starts with multiple injuries plaguing him throughout the season. He’s healthy now, and should enter the season as the clear starter on the depth chart.

Mitchell starts the season against a Bears defense that ranked 16th in aFPA to opposing running backs last year, and as long as he can stay on the field, the team should feature him. Expect a full workload and RB2 numbers for the second-year back out of Louisiana.

SF RB Elijah Mitchell - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Coming off a 963-yard rookie season, Elijah Mitchell proved ideal for Kyle Shanahan's scheme with his ability to get wide, make the correct cuts, and run through arm tackles. As CBSSports.com noted, Mitchell's rise came without warning as he was drafted well after Trey Sermon, and veteran holdovers Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. seemed to have the edge in experience. But Mostert and Wilson were sidelined by injuries, Sermon was a huge disappointment, and Mitchell became a prime waiver-add after Week 1. He suited up for 11 games last year, missing the other six with a combination of shoulder, rib, finger, head and knee issues. Still, Mitchell, who ran the ball anywhere from 21 to 27 times in each of the final five regular-season games in which he played, finished 14th among running backs in PPR points per game and appears to be heading into 2022 with the lead role in his possession -- even if there are reasons for concern.

2022 Fantasy Downside
NBCSports.com's Matt Maiocco reports that Shanahan appears determined to deploy more of a backs-by-committee approach this season. Maiocco went on to explain there are legitimate concerns about Mitchell’s durability. He had a "clean-up" procedure on his knee after a season in which he also missed time due to shoulder, ribs, finger and head injuries. Beyond the six games missed due to injury, Mitchell saw his average per carry drop to just 3.1 yards per attempt in the postseason. At this point, Maiocco believes Wilson is behind Mitchell in the pecking order with Trey Sermon and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price behind Wilson.

2022 Bottom Line
It goes without saying Mitchell's potential success in 2022 will hinge on his health, but it's also worth noting if he leads the 49ers in rushing in 2022, he'll be the first running back to repeat under Shanahan's tutelage since Devonta Freeman in 2015-16. All that said, as the lead component in this offense, Mitchell remains a solid RB2 for fantasy purposes.

SF RB Elijah Mitchell - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Houston Texans

Elijah Mitchell has missed the past couple of games and will be worth monitoring as we get close to the weekend. If he’s able to start, he should be considered a solid option in all leagues against the Texans, who just gave up big numbers to Justin Jackson last week, and rank 29th in aFPA to opposing running backs. That being said, watch the injury report carefully and have a backup option ready in case he’s a late scratch again.

SF RB Elijah Mitchell - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Tennessee Titans

Elijah Mitchell missed last week but has been productive when he starts. He’s a question mark heading into this week’s tilt against the Titans, so be sure to monitor the injury report and try to have Jeff Wilson at the ready in case of a late scratch. Mitchell, if active, is a strong RB2 candidate, despite a tough matchup against a Titans defense that ranks fourth in aFPA to opposing running backs.

SF RB Elijah Mitchell - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Elijah Mitchell missed last week’s contest with concussion issues and is a question mark going into this week’s tilt against the Falcons. The Falcons defense ranks 24th in aFPA to opposing running backs, so there should be plenty of room for Mitchell to run if he’s active. Watch the injury report in case he has a setback, but right now, it seems like he should return to action. If he does, he’s a legit RB1.

Update: Mitchell is out this week so be sure to get him out of your lineups.

SF RB Elijah Mitchell - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Cincinnati Bengals

Elijah Mitchell was held to just 3.0 yards per carry on 22 attempts last week, but he found the end zone and added three receptions to total 84 yards from scrimmage. Mitchell has been as steady as they come when healthy, with over 100 yards four times and a touchdown five times in just nine starts.

This week, Mitchell faces a Bengals defense that ranks 24th in aFPA to opposing running backs. He’s dealing with some concussion symptoms, even though he was able to finish the game last week, so be sure to monitor his status and have a backup plan in place. However, if he starts, he should definitely be considered a high-end fantasy option.

Update: Mitchell is inactive, so fire up Jeff Wilson in his stead.
