Tennessee has been remarkably solid under head coach Rick Barnes. While success in March never seems to come his way, Barnes has led the Vols to a top-four finish in the SEC five out of the last six seasons. Tennessee did lose a handful of key players. Julian Phillips, Tyreke Key and Uros Plavsic all graduated or went pro. Tennessee also took a hit when Olivier Nkamhoua transferred to Michigan.
This year's team is going to be anchored by a trio of returning stars. Santiago Vescovi feels like he's been around forever. Josiah-Jordan James never blossomed into the sure-fire lottery pick many thought he could be, so he returns for a third year to boost the Vols squad. Perhaps most importantly, Tennessee gets Zakai Zeigler back. Zeigler led the team and was third in scoring before tearing his ACL in February. Zeigler played 12 minutes in the season-opening win against Tennessee Tech.
It feels like Wisconsin's run to the National Championship game in 2015 was a lifetime ago. The Badgers failed to reach the second weekend in the NCAA Tournament in their last three appearances and failed to even reach the big dance last season. There's pressure on coach Greg Gard to perform this year, but there's plenty to be optimistic.
While they missed the NCAA Tournament, Wisconsin made a run to the NIT Semifinals and they basically have every major contributor back this season. The top five leading scorers for Wisconsin are back. The Badgers also added guard AJ Storr, who averaged almost nine points a game as a freshman last year at St. John's. Storr scored 15 points in his Wisconsin debut against Arkansas State so he gives the Badgers another scoring option.
