Chiefs beat writer Adam Teicher on how the team will split touches between Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis: I think the Chiefs will adjust to game conditions each week, maybe using one guy if he’s far more effective than the other. But the Chiefs like the potential they have in using both players a lot. They like the idea of keeping both players fresh well into the game. I’m not suggesting Charles won’t ever again play games in which he gets the ball more than 25 times. I’m sure he will. But the days of the Chiefs relying so heavily on Charles week in and week out are over. They have too many other good skill players like Davis and tight end Travis Kelce for that to happen.

It worked well against the Patriots, when Charles saw 21 touches to Davis' 17, but the game got out of hand pretty quickly, and the Chiefs won't have the luxury of giving 38 touches to their running back every week.

The Cincinnati Bengals placed tight end Tyler Eifert on injured reserve with a designation to return due to the elbow injury he suffered in Sunday's game, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

NFL teams are allowed to use the IR designation in just one case each season. Under the guidelines of the rule, Eifert won't be eligible to practice for six weeks and can't return to game action for eight weeks after he is officially put on short-term IR.

Eifert was poised for a breakout season prior to the injury. He can be safely dropped in virtually all formats. Jermaine Gresham finished #14 and #10 in PPR formats in 2011 and 2012 before Eifert's arrival. He doesn't have much upside, but he offers consistent baseline-type production at the position. Delanie Walker, Travis Kelce, Larry Donnell, Tim Wright and Marcedes Lewis are other good-to-decent fallback options.

If the Chiefs ever need WR Donnie Avery to have a big game, it's on Sunday when they open the regular season against the Tennessee Titans at Arrowhead Stadium. Dwayne Bowe won't play because of his NFL suspension and the other four Chiefs wide receivers have a combined 21 career NFL receptions.

"Whether it's putting me in some of the Dwayne Bowe plays or putting the young guys in some of the Dwayne Bowe plays, we've got to step up and take that role," Avery said.

Avery is the most logical candidate. Frankie Hammond Jr., playing his first NFL game, will get a lot of the snaps that otherwise would go to Bowe. Junior Hemingway also figures to get a lot of playing time, but he missed most of the preseason with hamstring and hip injuries. A.J. Jenkins hasn't been of much help and Albert Wilson is an undrafted rookie also playing his first NFL game.

If experience means anything, Avery will be the go-to wide receiver Sunday for quarterback Alex Smith.

We would be a bit higher on Avery if not for a tough matchup against the Titans secondary that features a top cover corner in Jason McCourty. TE Travis Kelce could have his coming out party against the Titans, who struggled to cover tight ends in 2013.
