2010 NFL Coaching Turnover
Generally we used this space to tell you about all the coaching turnover from the offseason - the guys who lost their jobs, the first time head coaches, and the coaches with new teams. However, this has been an unusually quiet offseason. Even Tom Cable and Eric Mangini, guys who seemed destined for the unemployment line, were able to retain their jobs.
By contrast, last year we had 8 rookie head coaches and 2 more returning from interim gigs. In 2010 we have only 3 head coaches in new positions (Gailey, Carroll, and Shannahan), and all three have head coaching experience.
To help get you back up to speed, here's a quick review by team. These changes are vitally important to fantasy football owners, and lay a solid foundation for prepping for the 2010 Fantasy Football season.
Arizona Cardinals
Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt - starts his fourth year as AZ's Head Coach. Offensive Coordinator - highly experienced Russ Grimm. Team coaching staff has significant ties to the Bill Cowher Steelers teams.
Atlanta Falcons
Head Coach Mike Smith - entering his 3rd season. Exceeded expectations in his rookie season and failed to make the playoffs in year two. However, the team's OC run the offense. Offensive Coordinator - Mike Mularkey - is highly experienced and has also been a head coach in the NFL. In addition, Mularkey was successful as an OC with the Steelers.
Baltimore Ravens
Head Coach John Harbaugh - entering his 3rd season as the Head Coach in Baltimore, Harbaugh learned under Eagles HC Andy Reid. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron - a proven NFL OC, Cameron is largely in control of the team's offensive play calling.
Buffalo Bills
Head Coach Chan Gailey - returning to the NFL as a head coach, Chan Gailey will look to revive a struggling offense. Gailey was hired for his offensive mind, and having held various OC jobs in the past. While he has run a shotgun-oriented attack in the past, Gailey has expressed that establishing a good running game is at the core of his offensive beliefs. Offensive Coordinator Curtis Modkins - rookie OC, former ARI RBs coach.
Carolina Panthers
Head Coach John Fox - entering his 9th season the Panthers Head Coach. Was under fire due to playoff losses and his support of Jake Delhomme. Offensive Coordinator Jeff Davidson - in his 4th season.
Chicago Bears
Head Coach Lovie Smith - proven veteran in his 6th year with the Bears, but finds himself on the hot seat due to a poor 2009. Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz - takes over for released Ron Turner, with big expectations for his pass heavy system in Chicago.
Cincinati Bengals
Head Coach Marvin Lewis - in his 8th season with the Bengals. Has stepped down off the hot seat after winning the AFC North last season. Offensive Coordinator Bob Bratkowski - was considered one of the better OC's in the league.
Cleveland Browns
Head Coach Eric Mangini - in his second year as the Browns head coach. Many thought Mangini would be gone with the hiring of Mike Holmgren as team president, but Mangini kept his job and now finds himself on a one year trial. Offensive Coordinator Brian Daboll - largely unproven, second year in this role, will have his work cut out for him likely implementing a Mike Holmgren driven West Coast system.
Dallas Cowboys
Head Coach Wade Phillips - in his 4th season as the Cowboys head coach. Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett - also in his 4th season. Considered one of the better OC's in the league.
Denver Broncos
Head Coach Josh McDaniels - former Patriots OC, second year head coach. Has had a year to bring in players that he believes will fit in his system while getting rid of players with superior talent. Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy - also in his 2nd year.
Detroit Lions
Head Coach Jim Schwartz - 2nd year NFL Head Coach with a focus on defense. Offensive Coordinator Scott Linehan - is the primary play caller.
Green Bay Packers
Head Coach Mike McCarthy - in his 5th year as the Head Coach, not the type that makes many changes. Offensive Coordinator Joe Philbin - 4th season in this role.
Houston Texans
Head Coach Gary Kubiak - former Denver OC, now in his 4th season as the Texans head man. He has a heavy hand in the offense. Offensive Coordinator Rick Dennison - comes from Denver to take over for Kyle Shannahan. Dennison will be calling plays for the first time, but don't expect a big difference - Kennison, Kubiak, and Shannahan all come from the same system in Denver.
Indianapolis Colts
Head Coach Jim Caldwell - now in his 2nd season, Caldwell set the record for most consecutive wins to start a coaching career at 14 before losing to the Saints in the Superbowl. Offensive Coordinator Clyde Christensen - in his 1st year as OC after being promoted from WRs coach, Christensen takes over the reigns from long time OC Tom Moore. Moore will still be involved in game planning, but Christensen will take over play calling duty. Don't expect a lot of change in the offense attack with Peyton Manning at the helm.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Head Coach Jack Del Rio - in his 8th season as head man. Offensive Coordinator Dirk Koetter - 4th season as OC.
Kansas City Chiefs
Head Coach Todd Haley - only his 2nd year as an NFL head coach. However, Haley has 15-years experience in the NFL including his recent stint as the Arizona Cardinals OC. Offensive Coordinator Charlie Weis - in his first year with the Chiefs, former Patriots OC and coached with Haley under Bill Parcells for the Jets.
