I know what it’s like to experience mediocrity in your home fantasy football league. You incisively analyze the draft process and nail your values, you pick through the weekly waiver wire to find scrubs who will blossom into stars by the end of the season, you break down the matchups and make the best starting choices you can. Yet, you fall a few wins or few points short of playoff glory. I understand; I’ve been there.

Before any of that, though, remember all the draft guides in the world pale in comparison to both knowing your league mates and understanding your league’s scoring system fully. When that draft clock is ticking down, knowing your friend is a huge Cleveland Browns fan and will overdraft their players—or that ESPN standard leagues allow you to start one QB, two RBs, two WRs, one TE, one FLEX, one Kicker, and one D/ST—is crucial to help you keep on top of the draft. The strategy tips and draft ideas I offer up below are not one-size-fits-all, and you might see trends emerge in your draft I don’t even touch on.
Stay flexible, stay aware, but keep these guidelines in mind and you will finally (or again) reach the ESPN fantasy football promised land in 2021.
