Fantasy Football Sneaky Starts: Week 3

C.McCoy

As injuries pile up, all but the luckiest fantasy owners will at some point need to find the proverbial diamond in the rough -- a waiver wire player who is capable of putting up some points in a pinch. This weekly feature is dedicated to that part of fantasy football. It's not pretty, but it's part of the game.

Last week, we discussed a few gems (Rex Grossman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, James Starks, Willis McGahee, Darren Sproles and Fred Davis), but also struck out with Johnny Knox, Brian Hartline and Carnell Williams. Such is the nature of Sneaky Starts: They won't all be winners.
Here's a look at Week 3...

QUARTERBACKS

Rex Grossman, Redskins
Grossman is still available in 80% of ESPN fantasy leagues and given his matchup (the Cowboys have given up an average of 224 yards and 2.0 pass TD per game), he should be a solid start in Week 3. Remember, Grossman torched the Cowboys for 322 yards and four TDs late in 2010, and is averaging 298 yards and 2.0 TD so far this season.
Colt McCoy, Browns
McCoy is still flying under the radar, but he has tossed three TDs in two weeks. He faces a Dolphins defense that is ranked 30th in passing yards allowed (362 per game) and 31st in passing TDs allowed (6).
The Broncos aren't bad in terms of passing yards allowed (205 per game), but they'll be without Champ Bailey. Not good. Hasselbeck has 621 yards and three TDs in two starts and he's clicking right now with Kenny Britt and Nate Washington.
