Perfect Draft Series: Drafting 6th in a 10 Team League
My first perfect draft assignment had me drafting for a PPR league, but this time I’ll be tackling a standard scoring system, picking 6th in a 10 team league. Most of the leagues I draft in are standard scoring anyway, so this is a little more in my comfort zone. However, the sixth pick is an interesting draft position because of the first round value at the RB position.
Once again, I used the powerful tool PC Drafter for this assignment and enjoyed running several scenarios to determine the best options at the 6th spot. The 6th pick presents a challenge for fantasy owners, as this is the first spot in most drafts where Calvin Johnson becomes a tempting option. I end up drafting a RB in all the leagues that I’m faced with this quandary, but this position represents good value for the Lions Pro Bowler as well, for those who like to go in that direction.
I used the Performance 1 Standard scoring system this time and set my Position Min/Max values at no more than three QBs, two TEs, kickers or team defenses, and no more than five running backs or wide receivers. The lineup was based on starting one QB, two RB, two WR, one TE, one K, and one team defense. The positional values were set to standard draft value in order to closely simulate an actual draft.
Round 1, Pick 6 – C.J. Spiller, RB, Buffalo
Calvin Johnson went one pick before me, so picking Spiller became a no-brainer. I’ve seen Spiller, Charles, and Calvin all drop to the 6th spot in some of the league’s I’ve been in, and any one of those players is excellent value here. In this draft, Spiller fell to the sixth spot and I grabbed him without a second thought. Spiller is a massive talent with the kind of breakaway speed that keeps defensive coordinators up at night. After showing what he could do last season in a limited role, he’s proven that whether he’s getting a dozen touches or 20 touches in a game, he can be fantasy gold. Spiller will anchor my team this year.
