MIN RB Aaron Jones - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Houston Texans

Aaron Jones was dealing with a hip injury this week but it doesn’t seem like it will affect his availability for Sunday against the Texans. He remains the lead back in Minnesota, though he only has nine more touches than Ty Chandler. He faces a tough Texans front that has done well so far against the run, allowing just 2.27 yards per carry to opposing running backs. Jones checks in as a low-end RB2 thanks to his usage and snap count in Minnesota.

MIN RB Aaron Jones - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. San Francisco 49ers

A strong Vikings debut for Aaron Jones, rushing for 94 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Jones out-snapped Ty Chandler 30-19 and out-carried him 14-8. He remains the back to own in Minnesota with Chandler a top handcuff option. Jones faces a tough 49ers defense that held Breece Hall to just 54 rushing yards last week. Jones is a low-end RB2 this week.

MIN RB Aaron Jones - 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Aaron Jones is now in Minnesota, perhaps just to spite his former team, the Green Bay Packers. After not re-signing him and then bringing in Josh Jacobs, Jones decided to join a division rival. Packers-Vikings matchups got much more interesting. They'll happen in Weeks 4 and 17. After a bit of a slow start, Jones was huge for the Packers down the stretch as they made their playoff push. Jones finished the season with three straight 100-yard rushing games. Jones is the clear RB1 in Minnesota.

Fantasy Downside

The Vikings downgraded a bit at the quarterback position with Kirk Cousins now in Atlanta. Sam Darnold likely starts the season but J.J. McCarthy could see action at some point as a rookie. The Vikings also really like Ty Chandler, so while Jones should see plenty of volume, he may not be the true workhorse back for the Vikings.

2024 Bottom Line

All that said, Jones is still a fine fantasy option and should also see a boost due to an increase in touchdowns. He only scored three total touchdowns in 2023. You have to think that number will go up. Jones is worth a look in Rounds 5-7.

GB RB Aaron Jones - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Minnesota Vikings

Admittedly, last week was the ideal matchup for Aaron Jones and thankfully he produced on the ground with 21 carries for 127 yards. He out-touched A.J. Dillon 22 to 7, but Dillon did have the touchdown. Overall, Jones has the workload we are looking for, he's just missing the goal-line touches.

Minnesota ranks 7th aFPA against running backs, which will make the sledding much tougher this week on the ground for Jones. Hopefully, an offset in efficiency comes from an expanded role in the passing game to beat Brian Flores' blitzes. Jones is a back-end RB2 this week. You're starting him, but likely aren't loving it.

GB RB Aaron Jones - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Carolina Panthers

A.J. Dillon has gone limited-limited this week on Wednesday and Thursday and should he be active it lowers the expectation for Aaron Jones a bit, but against a clear rushing funnel in Carolina, Jones should be in a good spot either way. Jones didn't put up a great stat line without Dillon last week, but will be in a much better spot this week.

The Panthers rank 25th aFPA against running backs and are the biggest run funnel in the NFL. This is a great spot for Jones, but the prospect of Dillon returning is worth monitoring. He's a start either way this week, but is in the RB2 conversation without Dillon and would be more of a flex option with Dillon active.

GB RB Aaron Jones - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Aaron Jones looks likely to return to the lineup this week for the Packers, which would be a huge addition to the offense as A.J. Dillon has continued to struggle in the lead-back role. Jones returning would also be great for fantasy as Dillon has yet to practice this week after breaking his thumb last week.

The matchup on the ground against Tampa Bay isn't great, as the Bucs rank fourth aFPA against running backs, but what you're hoping for out of Jones is the passing work and role around the goal line should Dillon miss time. Jones is in the RB2/flex mix should Dillon be available, but he'll be firmly in the RB2 mix if Dillon happens to be out.

GB RB Aaron Jones - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

A week after looking like the lead back again in Green Bay, Aaron Jones was outplayed by A.J. Dillon against the Steelers. Jones did see more passing down and 2-minute snaps than Dillon, but was outproduced by his backup yet again. In a season full of one step forward and two steps back for the Packers skill position players, the trend continued for Jones.

The Chargers are going to be an ideal matchup for the Packers across the board, and Jones and Dillon are going to be facing the defense that is 23rd aFPA against running backs. It's always been easier to run on the Chargers, but ever-so-slightly this year it has become easier to pass on them. That's not to say this is a tough matchup, but given the split in workload, Jones isn't in as ideal a spot as the passing game. Jones is a back-end RB2 this week and should be started in all formats and just hope he gets the A side of the 1A/1B split this week.
