Week 1 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Alexander Mattison finally gets the role that most fans had been hoping he'd get. He was always the bridesmaid, but now he's the bride. Mattison always filled in well for Dalvin Cook but now he gets the backfield to himself. We have him ranked as the RB13 in a difficult matchup. Tampa Bay only allowed four rushers to cross the 100-yard mark a season ago and allowed just seven touchdowns to the position.

Fantasy Upside
Alexander Mattison has shown his ability to step up when needed for the Minnesota Vikings. In 2022, he played in all 17 games, rushing for 786 yards and scoring 7 touchdowns. His strong finish down the stretch in 2022 combined with the Vikings' commitment to him as evidenced by his new two-year deal, speaks to his potential. With Dalvin Cook's future with the Vikings seeming to be at an end, Mattison could see an increased workload in 2023. With Cook out of the way, Mattison is set to be the team’s every-down back.

Fantasy Downside
The main concern with Mattison is his ability to handle a full workload as the primary running back. While he has performed well in Cook's absence, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain that level of performance over a full season. Additionally, the Vikings' offense has been inconsistent, which could limit Mattison's opportunities.

2023 Bottom Line
Mattison is a player with potential upside for the 2023 fantasy season. He has shown he can produce when given the opportunity. We currently have him ranked as RB16 for 2023. He's worth considering as a flex option with the potential to perform as an RB2 if things break right.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Detroit Lions
Alexander Mattison found the end zone last week against the Jets, but he was held to just 18 yards on five touches, including a pair of receptions. Mattison can put together solid fantasy performances when given the touches, but when Dalvin Cook is healthy, the best managers can hope for is a vultured touchdown like last week. That's a tall order for a player who received only 25% of the offensive snaps against New York. Mattison is one of the best insurance policies in the league, but he should remain on the bench and out of fantasy lineups while Cook remains active.

Week 10 at Buffalo Bills
Another week, another game of backup duties for Alexander Mattison. If anything, Mattison's involvement in the offense is shrinking (three touches on a 14% snap share in Week 9). He is not a fantasy asset outside of having contingency value in the event of a Dalvin Cook injury.

Week 9 at Washington Commanders
Alexander Mattison vultured a touchdown from Dalvin Cook in Week 8, but overall only saw five carries and no targets in the passing game. Mattison will stumble his way across the goal line on occasion, but he does not see nearly enough work in the normal flow of a game to be fantasy relevant outside of being insurance for Cook's health.

Alexander Mattison occupied his typical backup role in Week 6 when he played only 14% of the snaps and got one carry with no targets. Business as usual for Mattison. He is nothing but a bench stash in fantasy unless Dalvin Cook suffers an injury and misses time.

Week 6 at Miami Dolphins
Alexander Mattison played 40% of the snaps in Week 5 and actually saw more targets than Dalvin Cook, but he still only totaled 40 scoreless yards on 12 touches. Mattison saw his best usage of the season in Week 5 but it's hard to see that continuing based on a one game sample. Cook continues to get the vast majority of the touches in Minnesota's backfield and that's not likely to change barring injury. Mattison is a bench stash but cannot be started for fantasy purposes.
