Scouting report

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at New York Giants

Alexander Mattison had just three touches for 13 yards in Week 4. His fantasy value is directly tied to the game flow of Minnesota. This week could be a week where he gets more playing time if Minnesota is able to build a lead on the Giants. But Mattison is still a risky play and isn't really worth much unless something happens to Cook.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Chicago Bears

Alexander Mattison saw a season-high in snap counts last week (30%) as he ran the ball 12 times for 58 yards and a touchdown. He's been involved each week, but his usage has so far mostly relied on whether the Vikings have been winning big. With an expected close game this week in a tough matchup against the Bears, we don't see much room for success with Mattison in Week 4.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Oakland Raiders

Alexander Mattison is somewhat involved in Minnesota's offense. He had a larger role in Week 1 due to the blowout, but played just eight snaps in Week 2 (12% of the offensive plays) while getting only four touches. He's not worth fantasy consideration at the moment.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Green Bay Packers

Alexander Mattison had nine carries for 49 yards in his Week 1 debut. But five of those runs came on Minnesota's final two drives of the game with the score being a blowout. Mattison will be valuable if Cook ever gets injured, but for now he's not worth much in fantasy.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Atlanta Falcons

Minnesota spent a third-round draft pick on Alexander Mattison and he's earned the backup role behind Dalvin Cook. Mattison looked good in the preseason, rushing 25 times for 89 yards in three games. He also caught a few passes, one of which went for a touchdown. Mattison should be involved in the offense, and he gets a favorable matchup in Atlanta. But since Cook can run and catch the ball, whatever Mattison gets will just be scraps. Expect somewhere between 30-40 scrimmage yards for Mattison, which makes him not much more than an RB4.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Minnesota spent a third-round draft pick on Alexander Mattison, and the rookie has a chance to step into the backup role right away. The Vikings actually used their backup quite a bit in 2018 as Latavius Murray averaged over nine touches per game in the final three games with Dalvin Cook healthy and Kevin Stefanski taking over playcalling. As a junior in 2018, Mattison rushed for 1,415 yards on 302 carries with 17 touchdowns in 13 games, so Minnesota is getting someone who is used to carrying the load if need be.

Fantasy Downside
Mattison is essentially in a battle for the backup position with Mike Boone. The Vikings also have Ameer Abdullah on the roster to potentially take away a few touches as well. We don’t know yet as of this writing who will win out that backup spot.

2019 Bottom Line
Mattison has a fairly high ADP for a player in his position. There’s certainly a level of intrigue with him as he’s a talented player who could win the backup spot in a run-heavy offense, but how valuable is that, really? He’s a great handicap pickup for Cook owners, but outside of that, there’s only so much value a backup running back can provide.
