Fantasy Upside
Minnesota spent a third-round draft pick on Alexander Mattison, and the rookie has a chance to step into the backup role right away. The Vikings actually used their backup quite a bit in 2018 as Latavius Murray averaged over nine touches per game in the final three games with Dalvin Cook healthy and Kevin Stefanski taking over playcalling. As a junior in 2018, Mattison rushed for 1,415 yards on 302 carries with 17 touchdowns in 13 games, so Minnesota is getting someone who is used to carrying the load if need be.
Fantasy Downside
Mattison is essentially in a battle for the backup position with Mike Boone. The Vikings also have Ameer Abdullah on the roster to potentially take away a few touches as well. We don’t know yet as of this writing who will win out that backup spot.
2019 Bottom Line
Mattison has a fairly high ADP for a player in his position. There’s certainly a level of intrigue with him as he’s a talented player who could win the backup spot in a run-heavy offense, but how valuable is that, really? He’s a great handicap pickup for Cook owners, but outside of that, there’s only so much value a backup running back can provide.
