Andre Williams finished his rookie year with over 700 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, often filling in for Rashad Jennings, who was in and out of the lineup all year. Williams didn’t show much versatility, but he only fumbled once all season and proved an ability to be a reliable between-the-tackles runner in the Giants offense.
Fantasy Upside
Williams seemed to earn the trust of the coaching staff and had a couple of really nice games, particularly late in the season against the Titans and Rams where he eclipsed 100 yards and averaged more than four yards per carry. Seven touchdowns showed his ability to run in short yardage situations, and as mentioned above, ball security is the best way to stay on the field under Giants coach Tom Coughlin.
Fantasy Downside
The Giants have two other running backs that are going to get more touches than Williams. He’ll start the season technically as the backup to Rashad Jennings, with Shane Vereen getting most of the sub-package snaps. Additionally, Williams was steady last year, but didn’t show much pop to his game, save for a couple of long runs late in the season. He finished the season averaging only 3.3 yards per carry, tied for four worst among players with at least 100 carries.
Bottom Line
Williams really only has value as a bench flyer on your fantasy roster, or more likely as a handcuff for Jennings owners. Williams will find carries limited, unless he can win the short yardage job, sitting behind the more accomplished Jennings and the more versatile Vereen all year. He’s worth adding late in the draft because of Jennings’ age and injury history, but he can’t be counted on as a key starter for you.
