Scouting report

by Brandon Niles

NYG RB Andre Williams - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Andre Williams finished his rookie year with over 700 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, often filling in for Rashad Jennings, who was in and out of the lineup all year. Williams didn’t show much versatility, but he only fumbled once all season and proved an ability to be a reliable between-the-tackles runner in the Giants offense.

Fantasy Upside
Williams seemed to earn the trust of the coaching staff and had a couple of really nice games, particularly late in the season against the Titans and Rams where he eclipsed 100 yards and averaged more than four yards per carry. Seven touchdowns showed his ability to run in short yardage situations, and as mentioned above, ball security is the best way to stay on the field under Giants coach Tom Coughlin.

Fantasy Downside
The Giants have two other running backs that are going to get more touches than Williams. He’ll start the season technically as the backup to Rashad Jennings, with Shane Vereen getting most of the sub-package snaps. Additionally, Williams was steady last year, but didn’t show much pop to his game, save for a couple of long runs late in the season. He finished the season averaging only 3.3 yards per carry, tied for four worst among players with at least 100 carries.

Bottom Line
Williams really only has value as a bench flyer on your fantasy roster, or more likely as a handcuff for Jennings owners. Williams will find carries limited, unless he can win the short yardage job, sitting behind the more accomplished Jennings and the more versatile Vereen all year. He’s worth adding late in the draft because of Jennings’ age and injury history, but he can’t be counted on as a key starter for you.

NYG RB Andre Williams - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 – Andre Williams vs. Philadelphia

Andre Williams got to carry the load last week against the Rams, and he wound up with 110 yards on 26 carries, including a nice 45 yard run. Williams should once again carry the bulk of the touches against the Eagles this week, with Orleans Darkwa getting a few change of paces touches like he did last week.

The Eagles have been a slightly below average run defense this year, allowing 113 yards per game on the ground. Expect Williams to get his usual 65-85 yards or so against the Eagles, with a nice chance at a touchdown, making him a solid RB2 option in most leagues.

NYG RB Andre Williams - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – Andre Williams vs. St. Louis

Andre Williams had 18 carries last week, but continued to struggle to get big runs. He ended up with only 44 yards and averaged 2.4 yards per carry. The rookie out of Boston College got a full workload after Rashad Jennings left the game early with another injury.

Williams has a tough matchup this week against the stingy Rams, but he should get a full workload, making him a viable fantasy option while Rashad Jennings is out. Williams has been touchdown dependent this season, limiting his upside, but if you need someone almost guaranteed to get you 8-12 fantasy points, he’s not a bad RB2 option.

NYG RB Andre Williams - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Andre Williams vs. Washington

Andre Williams achieved his first 100 plus rushing yard game of his career last week as the Giants trounced the Titans. He wound up with 131 yards on 24 carries. However, Williams looked like the same plodding back he has all season, minus one big run. He averaged 3.5 yards per carry aside from a 50 yard touchdown run in the third quarter that inflated his average. Still, a good sign to see for fantasy owners.

Or perhaps not a good sign, because Williams was considered a handcuff to Rashad Jennings, who should be in line for a bigger workload this week now a couple weeks removed from injury. We like Jennings to get the bulk of the touches overall, but for Williams to get a dozen or so touches as well, hurting the fantasy value of both players. We have Williams just inside our top 30 this week, making him a fringe RB2/3/Flex option at best.

NYG RB Andre Williams - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 – Andre Williams vs. Tennessee

Andre Williams had eight carries for 21 yards last week against the Jaguars and he added 16 yards on two receptions as well. He remains behind Rashad Jennings, limiting his upside, even against a great matchup like the Titans this week. If Jennings misses the game with a nagging injury, then Williams becomes borderline RB2 worthy, but otherwise, he’s a longshot in deep leagues or TD only leagues, and he’s more suited as a handcuff.

NYG RB Andre Williams - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 – Andre Williams vs. Jacksonville
Andre Williams had a nice game getting change of pace touches behind starter Rashad Jennings last week, but only because he found the end zone on a short yardage carry. He wound up with 11 touches and 47 yards, including a rare 12 yard reception, to go with his touchdown. This is about the best you can expect from Williams, who will continue to get half a dozen touches or so behind Jennings. He’s a low end RB3 option in large leagues or a decent RB2 in touchdown only leagues.

NYG RB Andre Williams - Week 12, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 – Andre Williams vs. Dallas
Andre Williams has been relegated to backup duties behind a now healthy Rashad Jennings, and he only had three touches against the 49ers for a total of six yards from scrimmage. Expect Williams to get a few more touches against Dallas this week, but not enough to make him a viable fantasy option. Williams should be considered a handcuff only, and should not be active in your lineup as long as Jennings is healthy.
