Antonio Brown now threatens to not play football due to helmet issue

Adam Schefter of ESPN is now reporting Raiders WR Antonio Brown has told team officials that, unless he is allowed to wear his preferred helmet, he will not play football again. Schefter says Brown “believes the new helmet that the rules mandate he wears protrudes out and interferes with his vision as he tries to catch football” and that the Raiders have been sending Brown other helmets to try and he is not interested in any of them.

Fantasy Impact: 

This has turned into a strange story. It sounds like a lot is now riding on the expected grievance hearing next week and if Brown loses his case, his next steps will be fascinating to watch. It’s almost making the foot injury a non-story. Brown still has tremendous upside for his talent but is also becoming more of a risk if he actually stays true to his threat to not play.

Antonio Brown’s absence related to helmet grievance

Raiders WR Antonio Brown’s recent absence from training camp stems more from his recently-filed helmet grievance against the NFL, rather than his blistered foot, per Adam Schefter.

Fantasy Impact: 

A previous report from Chase Williams of WPXI in Pittsburgh said the Raiders stated Brown had gone “radio silent” and they had “no clue” of his whereabouts. Now, he is expected to return soon, according to Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Brown's grievance against the NFL states he wishes to wear a helmet he prefers, rather than a mandated one by the league. However, per NFL policy, only a team can be punished for a player wearing a wrong helmet, not the player himself. His hearing is expected to take place next week.

According to Chris Simms on PFT Live, Antonio Brown burned his feet by entering a cryotherapy machine without the proper footwear, and his feet were frostbitten.

Fantasy Impact: 

Well, I don't think anyone saw that one coming. Now that we know Antonio Brown has frostbite, we, unfortunately, are still left out in the dark, the frigid dark, when it comes to a timetable to return to the field. Presumably, the Raiders knew what the injury was when Adam Schefter tweeted that it wasn't something the team was worried about, but this is still an injury that is keeping him off the field and is worrisome for fantasy.

Antonio Brown away from camp, 'gathering information' on his foot issue

Jon Gruden said that Antonio Brown is not in Raiders camp, but instead, he is “gathering information” on his foot issue.

Gruden didn’t want to offer any other updates on Brown other than that. Said there is no new news on Brown’s situation and refused to speculate on his readiness for Week 1.

Fantasy Impact: 

There isn't much new here other than the fact that Antonio Brown is still seeking help for his foot issue, which means he's likely not much closer to returning to practice. The latest reports still have Brown's injury as minor, but the lack of information along with Jon Gruden's personality will continue to stoke rumors and more questions.
