Scouting report

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Arian Foster vs. Dallas Cowboys
It wasn’t known if Arian Foster’s hamstring was going to let him play last week versus Buffalo, but he made it through the contest. However, he wasn’t 100 percent and the Bills limited him to just six yards on eight carries. It wasn’t a total fantasy disaster, as Arian registered seven receptions for 55 yards. The Cowboys are yielding 380 total yards per game, so definitely start Foster, assuming he’s active, and look for him to rebound.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Arian Foster vs. Buffalo Bills
After carrying the ball 55 times the first two games, Arian Foster missed last week’s contest at the Giants due to a sore hamstring. With an extra week for it to heal, Foster should be good to go for his usual workload on Sunday, but it looks as though he could again be a game-time decision. As long as he’s active, go ahead and start him, even against a Buffalo defense that is only giving up an average of 84 yards per game on the ground.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Arian Foster vs. New York Giants
For the second straight game Arian Foster was over the century mark, as he ran through Oakland’s defense for 138 yards and his first score of ’14. Arian carried the rock 28 times and nearly had another TD, but was ruled down at the one after a 40-yard burst. New York is allowing 341 total yards per game, so keep on riding Foster.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Arian Foster vs. Oakland Raiders
It appears Arian Foster's back is just fine. Last Sunday in the win over Washington he ran for 103 yards on 27 carries, handling all but six of Houston’s rushing attempts. He also had two catches for 17 yards. With the Texans getting ahead at half, they turned the ball over to their All-Pro RB and rode his legs to the win. The Jets ran for 212 yards against the Raiders in the opener so Foster has to be salivating. He has been dealing with a bit of a rib injury but should be fine. Just go ahead and ink Arian into your starting lineup.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Arian Foster vs. Washington Redskins
After an injury-filled ’13 campaign in which he played in only eight games and needed back surgery, Arian Foster is ready for a bounce-back season. For the second straight year he did not see any preseason action, which is a bit of a concern. However, he’ll receive plenty of touches in Week 1, especially now that Ben Tate isn’t around to push the Houston staff for playing time. Alfred Blue and Jonathon Grimes will definitely spell Foster, but this is Arian’s team and is a must start as long as he’s in the lineup.

HOU RB Arian Foster - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Arian Foster is coming off a year in which he missed time with pre-season injuries, looked a step slow when he returned, then got shut down by back surgery after eight games. The back surgery was a disappointing development for fantasy owners counting on the star RB to continue handling the same massive workload for the Texans that he did the three previous seasons. Meanwhile, the Texans' backfield will have a different look under new HC Bill O'Brien. Ben Tate moved on to Cleveland, leaving Foster without a proven commodity to push him. In addition, the lack of a high-end QB all but ensures the Texans will be a run-first offense.

Fantasy Downside
Foster declared himself fully healthy in early April and said he had already been working out for two months. In turn, Foster was on the field for the start of OTAs on May 27 and worked without difficulty. "I'm fine," said Foster. "I got cleared." The concern, however, comes with Foster missing the first two weeks of training camp with a tender hamstring (which is not dissimilar to how he started last season).

Bottom Line
Should fantasy owners expect a comeback to the form that made him a top prospect in previous years? It's certainly within the realm of possibility. A fully healthy summer would have added to that. Instead, however, fantasy owners could benefit from a slight dip in ADP and the added value that goes with it.
