Veteran receiver Arnaz Battle is expected to make the 49ers' season-opening roster again this season. It appeared in the offseason as if his days with the organization were coming to a rapid conclusion.

After all, the 49ers signed free-agent slot receiver Brandon Jones to a five-year, $16.5 million contract, then drafted Michael Crabtree with the No.10 overall pick.

But Jones is out through September with a fractured shoulder, and Crabtree has — through 38 days of a contract stalemate — snubbed his nose at the 49ers' offer of approximately $16 million in guaranteed money.

49ers HC Mike Singletary said today that for now Josh Morgan would remain one of the starters at wide receiver, but he left open the possibility that Arnaz Battle could unseat him. Singletary said earlier in training camp that Morgan had to work on being more consistent. Today he echoed that. "He's still learning how to be a pro," he said. "At some point, the light's going to go on and he's going to take off." Asked whether Battle could overtake Morgan, Singletary said he'll "continue to watch the film and continue to look at the possibilities. But right now it is what it is." ... Left unsaid is the fact that Michael Crabtree also could replace Morgan when/if he signs. Crabtree has been earmarked for the split-end spot opposite Isaac Bruce.

49ers WR Arnaz Battle returned to practice after missing a day with hamstring tightness. The only players who did not participate in practice were Alex Smith (right thumb), left guard David Baas (left guard), right tackle Adam Snyder (right knee) and receiver Brandon Jones (shoulder).

The 49ers are calling their version of the Wildcat formation the Taser.

Wide receivers Michael Spurlock and Arnaz Battle took shotgun snaps in the formation Wednesday morning. Running back Michael Robinson, out with a groin injury, will also practice the Taser when healthy. All three players are former college quarterbacks.

"It was our first foray into it," offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said. "There are some things about it that are different for us, and good. I like what I saw from Michael Spurlock. The initial introduction of it was very good."

Spurlock said he did not expect to run the Taser on Friday night when the 49ers open their exhibition season against Denver at Candlestick Park.
