Scouting report

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Chicago Bears

Ekeler out-snapped Gordon 38 to 34 but was out-touched 12 to 18. He had five rushing attempts for seven yards and seven receptions on eight targets for 118 yards and one touchdown. This is a good time to remind everyone a running back reception in half PPR scoring is worth about three times the value as a rushing attempt and four times the value in full PPR leagues, per Sharp Football Analysis.

He could have had a second touchdown but his last-minute touchdown was questionably overturned by the replay booth. The Chargers stubbornly did not run a quarterback sneak within the one-yard line, which led to Melvin Gordon fumbling the game away. Ekeler has been the more efficient running back and deserves more opportunity but Head Coach, Anthony Lynn, appears to think otherwise. This isn't surprising considering the Chargers do not have a single analytics person on staff.

Chicago is the sixteenth best defense against the running back position, as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Ekeler ranked as the half PPR RB19 and the PPR RB14 this week.

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Chicago Bears
Gordon out-snapped Ekeler 37 to 28 and out-touched him 11 to 8. Continue to monitor the snaps and touches on a weekly basis to get a better idea of the Charger’s game plan with their running back by committee. Also, keep in mind, a running back reception in half PPR scoring is worth about three times the value as a rushing attempt and four times the value in full PPR leagues, per Sharp Football Analysis.

Tennessee is the ninth-best defense against the running back position, as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Ekeler ranked as the half PPR RB21 this week. Touchdowns might be few and far between because this matchup has the third-lowest over/under (41) of the week.

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Chargers tried to force feed Melvin Gordon until they found themselves down by 17 points at halftime. Partially due to the negative game script, Ekeler out-snapped Gordon 46 to 32 and out-touched him 18 to 16. Gordon had 12 rushing attempts and four receptions while Ekeler had three rushing attempts and 15 receptions. Monitoring snaps and touches on a weekly basis will be key to solving this running back by committee going forward. After one week, it looks like Gordon will be the primary runner, while Ekeler is the pass catching back. However, it is important to avoid putting too much emphasis on a small sample and approach this backfield was with a fluid mindset.

Also keep in mind, a running back reception in half PPR scoring is worth about three times the value of a rushing attempt and four times the value in full PPR leagues, per Sharp Football Analysis.

Pittsburgh is the seventh best defense against the running back position, as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Ekeler ranked as a half PPR RB17 this week. For reference, Ekeler and Gordon are back-to-back in Paulsen’s half PPR rankings at 17 and 18, respectively.

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Denver Broncos

rushing attempts for 60 yards and a touchdown. Through four weeks, Ekeler is the half PPR RB2, behind Christian McCaffrey. However, it is time to pour one out for Ekeler because Melvin Gordon has returned and will limit Ekeler’s ceiling throughout the rest of the season.

Gordon was active last week but did not play a snap against the Dolphins. Per Gilbert Manzano on Friday, Chargers Head Coach Anthony Lynn said, “I don’t want to put (Melvin Gordon) in there and play him too much, and I really don’t have to. I like what Austin Ekeler has been doing.” The Chargers will most likely ease Gordon back into the starting role, which buys Ekeler more time to produce high end fantasy numbers.

The Broncos defense presents as a run-funnel. This means it is easier to run the ball against the Broncos than it is to pass. Their secondary is sixth best against quarterbacks but their defensive front is third worst against running backs. Even with the presence of Gordon, 4for4 rankings expert, John Paulsen, has Ekeler ranked as a half PPR RB1 this week.

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Miami Dolphins

Take advantage of Ekeler as the lead running back while you can because Melvin Gordon is back with the team and on track to play in Week 5. In Week 3, Ekeler out-snapped Justin Jackson 65% to 37% and out-touched him 16 to 9. Ekeler finished with seven receptions for 45 yards and had nine rushing attempts for 36 yards. Ekeler continues to be used heavily in the passing game but was not able to find the end zone against the Texans.

Ekeler is a must-start in all league formats against an abysmal Dolphins defense. Miami is dead last against running backs, as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric. 4for4 rankings expert John Paulsen has Ekeler ranked as the Half PPR RB1.

UPDATE:
Justin Jackson is OUT against the Dolphins. He was added to the injury report and seen wearing a walking boot. Jackson's absence should increase Ekeler's usage and playing time.

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Houston Texans
In Half PPR scoring, Austin Ekeler is the top fantasy running back with 56.7 points. For comparison, Dalvin Cook is second with 51.6 points, and Derrick Henry is third with 44.7 points. Ekeler was heavily involved in Week 2 and finished with six receptions for 67 yards and had 17 rushing attempts for 66 yards and one touchdown. Believe it or not, Ekeler could have had a better performance if he didn’t lose a fumble at the goal line when he attempted to jump over the pile.

Ekeler is a must-start in all league formats against the Texans in Week 3. The Texans defense is good against running backs as shown by our signature schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed metric that has them ranked eighth-best. However, the matchup should not deter fantasy owners because 4for4 rankings expert John Paulsen has Ekeler ranked as the PPR RB4.

LAC RB Austin Ekeler - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Detroit Lions

Austin Ekeler took full advantage of the opportunity provided by Melvin Gordon’s contract holdout. Ekeler was clearly the lead back for the Chargers as he finished with 48 snaps compared to only 16 snaps for Justin Jackson. As expected, Ekeler was heavily involved in the passing game against the Colts with six receptions for 96 yards and two touchdowns and had 12 rushing attempts for 58 yards and one touchdown. He finished as the second-best running back, behind Christian McCaffrey, with 36.4 Half PPR fantasy points.

Ekeler could be heavily involved in the passing game for the second week in a row. Hunter Henry suffered a tibial plateau fracture and will miss 4-6 weeks and Mike Williams is questionable against the Lions. 4for4 rankings expert John Paulsen has Ekeler ranked as a fringe RB1 and is a must-start in all scoring formats.
