Scouting report

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Arizona
Benny Cunningham rushed once for 12 yards and also added two catches for 18 yards in the Rams Week 3 loss to the Steelers. Cunningham has been more effective moving the ball than Tre Mason, but Mason continues to start. Once Todd Gurley is healthy enough to carry the load, he'll be the Rams RB1 and Cunningham will remain the team's third-down back. Even though Cunningham is the team's best option at this point, he doesn't receive enough volume to be a viable fantasy option. Leave him on your waiver wire.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 2, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at. Redskins
Benny Cunningham rushed for 45 yards on 16 carries and also caught four-of-seven targets for 77 yards in the Rams Week 1 win over the Seahawks. Owners who were forced into starting Cunningham due to suspensions or injuries received decent output from the Rams' third-down back. St. Louis' offensive line didn't do him many favors, but Cunningham ran hard, picked up yards after contact and was a factor in the screen game. With Tre Mason set to return from a hamstring injury suffered in the third preseason game, Cunningham will revert back to his third-down duties on Sunday. He ranks as our RB48 for Week 2 and should be avoided in all formats.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 1, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Seattle
With Todd Gurley (ACL recovery) out and Tre Mason (hamstring) headed for a game-time decision, Benny Cunningham is likely to have an expanded role for the Rams on Sunday. The good news is the Rams are using more outside zone concepts in their running game this year under new OC Frank Cignetti, and Cunningham ran behind a zone scheme at Middle Tennessee three years ago. The bad news is Cunningham is facing the No. 3 fantasy run defense from last year this week in the Seahawks and is also running behind an inexperienced offensive line (the Rams will start two rookies along the O-line, a second-year left tackle in Greg Robinson and a center in Tim Barnes who only has four career starts under his belt.) The Seahawks held the Rams to just 3.13 YPC in two meetings last season and Cunningham has only received double-digit carries once in the past two years. Cunningham is our RB33 for Week 1, and unless you're desperate, it's best to avoid the Rams backfield this Sunday.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Todd Gurley is coming off ACL surgery and the Rams clearly don't feel as though Tre Mason can be a workhorse back or else they would not have selected Gurley with the 10th overall pick in this year's draft. Thus, if Gurley is slowed by his recover and Mason were to suffer an injury, Benny Cunningham would be in line to be the Rams' RB1. Already valued as a third down back, Cunningham continues to carve out a role in St. Louis offense thanks to his pass-catching ability and burst. Plus, the Rams are switching to more of a zone-blocking scheme this season, which suits Cunningham's skill set more than the power-based scheme they utilized under former OC Brian Schottenheimer.

Fantasy Downside
Cunningham will have limited fantasy value unless both Gurley and Mason suffer an injury. Once healthy, Gurley will be Jeff Fisher's workhorse back and Mason proved last year that he can be a reliable RB1 until Gurley is completely recovered from his ACL surgery. If both are healthy, Cunningham will be relegated to third down duties.

Bottom Line
Cunningham is currently ranked as our RB69 and is going undrafted in both 10 and 12-team leagues. Despite the addition of Gurley, Cunningham will still have a role in new OC Frank Cignetti's offense, but it'll be as a third down back. Unless both Gurley and Mason go down, Cunningham will not see enough touches to make a fantasy impact this season.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17: Cunningham vs. Seahawks
Benny Cunningham rushed once for negative one yard and caught two passes for 19 yards in the Rams' Week 16 loss to the Giants. The Rams actually used Zac Stacy for the first time in three weeks last Sunday, which cut into Cunningham's touches. But even on his more productive weeks, Cunningham has limited fantasy value. Avoid him for Week 17.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16: Cunningham vs. Giants
Benny Cunningham rushed for four yards on two carries while adding three receptions for an additional 23 yards in the Rams’ Week 15 loss to the Cardinals. Cunningham remains the Rams’ pass-catching back but doesn’t receive enough touches to hold any fantasy relevance. Avoid him in Week 16.

STL RB Benny Cunningham - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15: Cunningham vs. Cardinals
Benny Cunningham rushed three times for 20 yards while adding five catches for an addition 28 yards in the Rams' Week 14 win over the Redskins. Cunningham remains a clear RB2 behind Tre Mason in St. Louis and is used primarily as a COP and passing down back. He doesn't get enough touches to be fantasy relevant so avoid him for Week 15.
