Scouting report

JAX QB Blake Bortles - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Blake Bortles Week 8 vs. Miami
Blake Bortles has pretty much been an interception machine since stepping into the lineup in Week 3, averaging two per week. He threw for just 159 yards and a score with three picks last week. Miami's pass defense has been pretty solid this season and is coming off a game in which it held Chicago's vaunted passing attack to 190 yards and one score. There's no reason to play Bortles this week.

JAX QB Blake Bortles - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Blake Bortles Week 7 vs. Browns
Young Blake Bortles had his first 300-yard game last week, going for 336 yards and a touchdown last week, putting the ball in the air 46 times. He should put up decent yardage numbers at home again this week against a Cleveland defense allowing more than 300 yards per game in road games this season. Bortles isn't a sure thing, but he's showing signs of being useful in the future.

JAX QB Blake Bortles - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Blake Bortles Week 6 vs. Titans
Blake Bortles has shown some positives, such as an ability to tuck the ball and run for some extra yards, but he's got little to work with in terms of receivers or running backs. Opponents are also figuring out that he stares down receivers. The Steelers limited him to 191 yards passing with two interceptions last week. You can probably do better, even if your starter is on a bye.

JAX QB Blake Bortles - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Blake Bortles Week 5 vs. Steelers
Blake Bortles had 254 yards and a touchdown in his first career start and added 24 yards rushing on five attempts. But he also threw two interceptions. He's showing some promise, as long as you can live with the rookie interceptions. He won't have Marqise Lee or Cecil Shorts this week, so that hurts. The Steelers have given up at least two TD passes in each of their last three games. Bortles isn't starter quality this week, but he should definitely be on your radar. Dick LeBeau's Steeler defenses have given up 10 TD passes with 21 interceptions in 19 games against rookie starters since 2004.

JAX QB Blake Bortles - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Blake Bortles Week 4 vs. Chargers
It's easy to look the 223 yards and two touchdowns Blake Bortles put up last week in the second half against Indianapolis and get excited. But cool your jets a little there Sparky. Much of that came in pure garbage time. Will there be more garbage time this week? Possibly. The Jags are that bad and they play a pretty good San Diego team. Bortles is worth stashing on your roster, but I wouldn't play him this week unless you're truly desperate.

JAX QB Blake Bortles - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The third pick in this year's draft, Blake Bortles looked good in the preseason, showing the Jags might have been right to invest such a high pick.

Fantasy Downside
Chad Henne will open the season as the starter. Bortles will probably take over at some point, but when?

Bottom Line
Bortles is an intriguing prospect with great size and a big arm. He looks like a young Ben Roethlisberger. But without a starting job, unless you're in a keeper league, he's not worth taking right now.
