Quinn throwing deep ball effectively

Coaches dig the long ball, and Brady Quinn has been showing the Browns that he can throw it with ease.

During Sunday's Brown-White scrimmage at the Stadium, Quinn launched a 51-yard TD pass to speedster Lance Leggett on his opening play of the game. During the first week of camp, he aired it out plenty, including a deep pass in team drills to Leggett, at least 40 yards, that the receiver bobbled and then hauled in.

It appears that the new coaching staff is testing Quinn's arm to make sure he can throw deep effectively, and he's been passing with flying colors.

Regardless of how the Browns' quarterback competition shakes out, coach Eric Mangini envisions keeping both Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson for the 2009 season.
"In my mind, Brady and DA will both be here," Mangini said Sunday on the second day of training camp.

So unless a team desperate for a starting quarterback makes an offer Browns management can't refuse, both will be around. But that doesn't necessarily mean both will see the field.

Mangini said that once he makes up his mind -- and there's still no timetable -- he'll stick with his man and not try to platoon them.

"Once you make that decision, you go with that decision and at that point you move forward with that group," he said.

Anderson Outperforming Quinn Early in Camp

Derek Anderson clearly had the upper hand in the competition with Brady Quinn. Anderson's body language has changed dramatically since the June minicamp, when he looked like he didn't want to be in Cleveland any longer. On Sunday, he was sharp, decisive and managed the team well, especially in the two-minute drill. During seven-on-seven, he threw touchdowns on three of four snaps he took (finding rookie running back James Davis, tight end Aaron Walker and tight end Robert Royal). Anderson received a low five from offensive coordinator Brian Daboll after the throw to Royal.

Brady Quinn was the first quarterback to run the first team the first time the Browns lined up in 11-on-11s. Head Coach Eric Mangini said both Quinn and Derek Anderson “will get an equal amount of reps equally distributed through the different sessions.” Quinn seemed sharper in the morning practice than he was in the spring, when he didn’t seem sharp at all.
