WAS RB Brian Robinson - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Indianapolis Colts

If it wasn't clear before, it should be clear now: The Commanders really like Brian Robinson. In just his third game back, Washington fed Robinson the ball 20 times on the ground as he ran for 73 yards. He also saw two targets, catching two passes for 13 yards. In his two starts, Robinson has seen 39 touches, most of them being rush attempts. We'd expect the same formula this week as Robinson gets a decent matchup against the Colts. Indianapolis has given up the 8th-most rushing yards to running backs this year. Robinson's ceiling is a little capped given the three-headed attack in Washington, plus his lack of use as a receiver. But with a decent matchup, Robinson is a decent RB3/flex option in Week 8.

WAS RB Brian Robinson - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Green Bay Packers

Brian Robinson was officially the team's starting running back in Week 6, and he played like it, too. He saw a team-high 17 carries, rushing for 60 yards and a touchdown. He once again saw 0 targets, which is likely to be a theme considering the receiving skills of Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. Robinson should maintain his role as the starter for Washington heading into Week 7 as he gets an OK matchup against the Packers. Washington will be starting backup QB Taylor Heinicke, so it seems likely the team will lean more on the running game as Carson Wentz sits out. Still, with Robinson's lack of involvement as a receiver, plus the three-headed backfield, his ceiling is somewhat limited. We like him as an RB3 or flex play for Week 7.

WAS RB Brian Robinson - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Chicago Bears

Brian Robinson made his NFL debut in Week 5, six weeks after being shot as the victim in a robbery attempt. He got off to a decent start as he led Washington's backfield in carries (9). Although the playing time was pretty divided among Washington's three backs with J.D. McKissic leading the way (41%), followed by Antonio Gibson (32%) and then Robinson (29%). We expect this to be an annoying backfield moving forward, although Robinson may eventually take over as the lead. One thing to note from Week 6, though, is that Robinson saw zero targets while Gibson and McKissic saw a combined 11. So we'd expect Robinson to mostly be Washington's workhorse back with limited bonus value in PPR formats. Headed into a favorable Week 6 matchup against the Bears, we like Robinson as a low-end RB3 or flex play. The Bears have given up the 9th-most average fantasy points to running backs this season.

WAS RB Brian Robinson - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Brian Robinson was a 3rd-round draft pick, and the sixth overall running back taken in this year’s draft, meaning he’s not just some deep round depth chart add by Washington. Robinson was a solid contributor at Alabama, averaging 5.0 yards per carry on 545 attempts. He ranked fourth in missed tackles and eighth in 10+ yard runs last year, per PFF. He’s a big back (6'2" 224 lbs) who could see goal line work, in addition to short-yardage carries, this season.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Robinson joins a crowded backfield that features Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic. Gibson had the fourth-most touches by a running back a season ago, and McKissic has the third-most receptions by a running back over the past two seasons. Those are a lot of touches Robinson is going to miss out on, and it’ll likely be difficult to see enough playing time. If Robinson was a 1st-round back, we could see Washington trying to force some more touches to him, but as a 3rd-round back, he doesn’t carry enough weight to demand extra playing time.

2022 Bottom Line
Robinson will likely get enough playing time to annoy Gibson owners, but not enough to make him a viable option in fantasy. His biggest strength is that he’ll likely see a lot of goal line work, and that could lead to some big scoring days if he’s able to find the end zone multiple times. But he also could have games where he rushes five times for eight yards with no touchdowns. Robinson will be a great addition if Gibson ever goes down with an injury and could be viewed as a late-round handcuff. But in most leagues, he’s safe to go undrafted.
