Report: Westbrook contemplating retirement

Eight days after the Eagles exited the 2009 playoffs, word has emerged that one of their mainstays on offense over the past decade could be calling it quits.

Howard Eskin reported Sunday night on NBC Philadelphia's Sports Final and WIP radio that running back Brian Westbrook may have to retire.

But while concussions triggered talk during the season that Westbrook might not return, Eskin says that Westbrook's left knee is the problem, due to multiple surgeries and overall wear and tear. He'll be visiting doctors in the near future for additional opinions about whether he can still play.

Eskin says there's "almost no chance" Westbrook will play for the Eagles again (he's due to earn a $7.25 million salary in 2010), and that he might have trouble passing a physical for another team.

Giving Brian Westbrook no carries and one touch in the biggest game of the season - along with his hefty salary - is pretty overwhelming evidence that the Eagles are going in another direction. The sad truth is the Eagles were 7-1 this year when Westbrook didn't play and 4-5 when he did.

The Eagles tried to get too much out of Leonard Weaver, and he faded late. Lesean Mccoy needs to bulk up a bit, but he's a 21-year-old kid with a ton of promise, and he has to become the centerpiece of the running game. Eldra Buckley runs hard and is a good special teamer. With McCoy, Weaver and Buckley the Eagles will be in good shape.

After what might have been Brian Westbrook's final game in an Eagles uniform, a reporter asked rookie Lesean Mccoy if he thought he would be the team's primary back next season.
"I'm not sure," said McCoy, who has been extremely deferential to Westbrook all season.

Here's a wild guess, kid: You will be.

Westbrook didn't carry the ball once in the horrendous 34-14 wild-card round playoff loss to Dallas. He gathered in one garbage-time pass, rambling 27 yards with it, a brief glimpse of what Westbrook used to do when he was becoming the franchise's all-time top pass-catching running back.

"I thought I would be a little bit more involved [in the offense]. It kind of didn't work out that way tonight with LeSean being in the game more often. It was one of those things, I guess," Westbrook said late Saturday night, although he had hinted in his Wednesday news conference that he expected to be back-burnered in a make-or-break game.

Head coach Andy Reid said Thursday the plan for Dallas remains to spread the ball around to Brian Westbrook, Lesean Mccoy and Leonard Weaver

"Right now I wouldn't ask [Westbrook] to do (more)," he said. "We have three good backs and you just spread that around and they all have an opportunity."
