San Francisco’s first defense allowed three touchdowns and the team committed 10 penalties but the Niners still managed to squeak out their third straight preseason win.

They beat the Oakland Raiders 28-24 as backup quarterback David Carr led a late touchdown drive that gave the Niners the victory.

The Niners put together a 16-play, 80-yard drive to win it. Rookie running back Anthony Dixon scored on third-and-goal from the 1 to give San Francisco the lead with 1:44 remaining.

Frank Gore ran for 58 yards on two carries in his first action of the preseason for the Niners, Alex Smith threw a touchdown pass to Josh Morgan and rookie Phillip Adams scored on an 83-yard punt return as San Francisco remained undefeated in the preseason.

Linebacker Patrick Willis had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage against Darren McFadden and an 11-yard sack against Jason Campbell.

Niners LT Joe Staley (sprained knee) and running back Brian Westbrook (hamstring) are day to day. Niners WR Michael Crabtree did not play because of a stiff neck.

In one respect, Lesean McCoy is ahead of the game. Thanks to Brian Westbrook's injuries last season, McCoy gained 637 rushing yards on 155 carries as a second-round rookie out of Pitt, the most yards by any Eagles rookie rusher ever. He also caught 40 passes for 308 yards.

But just because McCoy showed promise in an opportunity that wasn't afforded to Staley or Westbrook (46 carries for 193 yards, nine catches for 86 yards in 2002) doesn't necessarily mean McCoy will become as good as Staley or Westbrook. McCoy wore down over the second half of the season; he never managed more than 48 yards rushing or 39 yards receiving in his last half-dozen games, including the playoff loss at Dallas. McCoy also had some typical rookie stuff to work through, such as dancing around in the backfield, thinking he was going to find a route around the entire defense, the way he often had at Pittsburgh, instead of hitting the hole quickly and taking what was there.

Fantasy Impact:

Lesean McCoy could be in for a fantastic year. All signs point to a 1000 yard season if McCoy can stay healthy. However, the Eagles haven't been confident in McCoy at the goal line and it hurts his overall value. McCoy is a better play in PPR leagues than standard scoring.

Brian Westbrook signs with 49ers

Former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Westbrook has been looking to find a job, visiting several teams in recent months. Westbrook had spent his entire eight-year career in Philadelphia but was released in the offseason after injuries limited him to just eight games in 2009.

The 49ers' 2009 third-round pick, running back Glen Coffee, abruptly retired over the weekend. Coffee was expected to compete with Anthony Dixon and Michael Robinson for the backup job to starter Frank Gore. Coffee told the 49ers he no longer wanted to play football.

Westbrook is a two-time Pro Bowler and at the height of his career was considered one of the best all-around backs in football. However, he struggled with multiple concussions in recent years and the Eagles decided to move on.

Westbrook led the NFL with 2,104 yards from scrimmage in 2007, but missed eight games last season with a pair of concussions and an ankle injury while scoring only two touchdowns.

The 30-year old passed a physical on a visit to St. Louis earlier this offseason. As recently as Saturday, the Rams denied reports they were close to a deal with Westbrook.

Westbrook also visited the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos during the course of the summer.

Fantasy Impact:

The move makes sense after Glen Coffee retired. Westbrook isn't what he used be, and while he should be the RB2 on the 49ers, he'll still have Michael Robinson and Anthony Dixon around. He's an injury risk at age 30 as well so don't have high expectations he'll be a major fantasy contributor this year.
