KC HC Haley: No quarterback controversy

There was a bit of a stir over the past 24 hours after some of Chiefs head coach Todd Haley’s comments regarding competition at the quarterback position. Today, Haley confirmed what was originally posted in this blog this morning (see first post): There is no quarterback controversy in Kansas City.

“No, there is not a quarterback controversy, ” Haley said. “My message is going to continue to be consistent to you. I just want (everyone) to understand that.“

Haley’s message of consistency is one of competition and dependable play at each position, quarterback included. Croyle echoed Haley comments in the locker room today.

“Matt is the man and they brought him here to be that,” QB Brodie Croyle said today. “I just go out there and try to play. Whenever my number is call, I try to go out there and play. But there is no controversy.”

Chiefs coach Todd Haley stopped short Friday of a ruling on QB Matt Cassel, saying after the team’s practice that he still couldn’t guarantee Cassel’s sprained left knee is healthy enough for a game-day load.

Haley said he would make a decision on Cassel’s availability Sunday morning.

“That’s the safest,” Haley said. “This will be a deal where we will have to make sure they’re good to go.”

Haley said early this week that he hoped to know about Cassel’s availability earlier this week than last, when Haley decided to deactivate Cassel after a morning workout in Baltimore. Brodie Croyle started in Cassel’s place.

Cassel practiced each day this week, and he has worn a brace on his left knee during each day’s workouts. The knee has been wrapped after practices. Cassel said Thursday that he was “leaps and bounds” better than he was at the same time last week, and Haley has said he thought Cassel had made noticeable progress.

Chiefs HC Haley said it was too early to know if quarterback Matt Cassel will miss a second straight start this weekend because of an injury to his left knee. But he is hopeful of making a decision earlier than Sunday, when the decision was made just hours before the season-opener at Baltimore.

If Cassel remains out, Brodie Croyle would make a second start, this one against Oakland, after earning generally high marks in the 38-24 loss to the Ravens.

"Matt is doing everything he can to be ready," Haley said. "I would hope I would know a little sooner this week, although right now I can't give a definitive answer. But the player's doing everything he can to be ready, which generally helps speed the healing process."
