Scouting report

CAR QB Bryce Young - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Houston Texans

Bryce Young had 217 yards and a touchdown in a blowout loss to the Dolphins before the bye last week. While the numbers aren’t getting super impressive yet, Young is quietly improving each week. He moved the offense well, and has developed a nice rapport with Adam Thielen.

This week, Young faces a Houston defense that ranks 20th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Young is a risky option, but he’s quietly been decent in his last two starts and the team is changing play-callers. You should have better options available, but if you’re desperate, he has some streaming upside in 2QB leagues.

CAR QB Bryce Young - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Miami Dolphins

Bryce Young had a decent fantasy day last week thanks to garbage-time statistics in a blowout loss to the high-octane Lions - yes, that feels weird to say, but I’m here for it! Young threw a pair of interceptions, but also tossed three touchdowns and 247 yards and looks a little more comfortable each game.

This week, Young has some desperation upside against a Miami defense that ranks 25th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Additionally, the Dolphins should be able to run up the score offensively, putting garbage-time stats in play again for Young. He’s too risky to bank on in one-quarterback leagues, but if you need an upside option in 2QB formats, Young might be worth the gamble.

CAR QB Bryce Young - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Detroit Lions

Bryce Young struggled in a loss to the Vikings last week, throwing for 204 yards and no touchdowns. The only touchdown the Panthers scored was on defense, and Young had a costly fumble as he was sacked five times. Watching the game, Young doesn’t look as bad as his stat lines show, but he has virtually no time in the pocket and the offense is struggling to finish in the red zone.

This week, Young faces a Detroit defense that ranks 17th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Young may need to throw from a negative game script this week, but he hasn’t shown nearly enough in his three starts to warrant fantasy consideration. The Panthers are still trying to find themselves, offensively, and expect more bumps and bruises for Young along the way. He’s droppable in redraft formats.

CAR QB Bryce Young - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Bryce Young was hurt last week but will make his third career start this week against Minnesota. Young has been uneven to start his career, but has a touchdown pass in each start and has shown the ability to make multiple progressions. He's playing a little tight right now, but the acumen and accuracy has been on display.

Young could be worth streaming in 2QB leagues in a nice matchup against the Vikings. Minnesota has been engaged in shootouts to start the season and they rank 27th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Young is too risky to bank on in 1QB formats, but if you're looking for a potential volume play, Young could be worth a deep gamble.

CAR QB Bryce Young - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Atlanta Falcons

Bryce Young threw a ridiculous 79 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions over the course of his two seasons as the starting quarterback at Alabama, and his accuracy and decision-making were primary reasons for the Panthers selecting him with the first overall pick in April’s draft. He’ll be given every opportunity to succeed and be the solution at the position that has eluded Carolina since Cam Newton exited (the first time) following the 2019 season.

Young gets a nice matchup to start off his career. The Falcons ranked 23rd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks in 2022. Still, Young is a rookie and doesn’t project for a ton of rushing production, so we have him conservatively ranked as a low-end QB2 option.

CAR QB Bryce Young - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Bryce Young put a bow on a phenomenal college career at Alabama with being the number one overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft. Young won the Heisman Trophy in 2021 and had a combined 79 touchdown passes and just 12 interceptions over his two seasons as a starter. Young will have a strong coaching staff and some interesting weapons around him in Carolina. D.J. Chark, Adam Thielen, and second-round rookie Jonathan Mingo are quality targets with upside and some veteran savvy, and the offensive line made strides in 2022 with the drafting of first-rounder Ikem Ekwonu. Young profiles as a dual-threat player, despite rushing for a mere 185 yards last season - though he did score four rushing touchdowns. The Panthers are hoping Young will make an immediate impact given all they gave up to draft him, and he has a better supporting cast then most highly-selected rookie quarterbacks.

Fantasy Downside
For all the excitement in Carolina, these are all brand new pieces. New coaches, new receivers, new starting running back in Miles Sanders, and even a new tight end in Hayden Hurst can spell some growing pains for the offense as a whole. While Young was touted as one of the most pro-ready passers from the football IQ side of things, he is still a rookie. Young also is much smaller than most starting quarterbacks, measuring in at 5-foot-10 and 204 pounds at the combine. With that size, concerns about durability abound.

2023 Bottom Line
We have Young ranked as a low-end QB2 option heading into the season. That’s a conservative ranking based on his lack of experience and a lack of knowledge about what this brand new Carolina offense is going to look like. That said, it’s hard to imagine any of the other players being drafted around him carrying the same level of upside. Fantasy managers should consider him as a late-round, high-upside option in two-quarterback leagues, or as part of a wait-on-a-quarterback two-pronged approach to the position in one-quarterback formats.
