MIN WR Charles Johnson - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Charles Johnson - Week 17 vs. Chicago Bears

Since Week 11 Charles Johnson has been the best receiving option for the Minnesota Vikings. Last week, however, he had a bit of a down game. He finished with just three receptions for 38 yards. It's difficult to rely on any receiver for Minnesota.

This week Johnson gets a decent matchup against the Chicago Bears. Johnson had his breaking out party against the Bears in Week 11 when he faced them in the first matchup. He finished with six receptions (season high) for 87 yards in that matchup.

Johnson should be viewed as a WR3 this week.

MIN WR Charles Johnson - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Charles Johnson - Week 16 vs. Miami

Charles Johnson has emerged as the Vikings' top option at receiver this season. Over his last five games he's been heavily involved in the offense and has posted some of the best numbers for Minnesota. He has games of 87 yards, 103 yards and 72 yards which he had last week.

Being the best receiver on the Vikings isn't a high honor, but at least he's producing. His emergence has made Cordarrelle Patterson irrelevant.

This week faces a Miami defense that is in the middle when it comes to defending wideouts. Johnson should be viewed as a WR3.

MIN WR Charles Johnson - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Charles Johnson - Week 15 vs. Detroit Lions

Charles Johnson is starting to emerge as a decent option for Minnesota. He caught four-of-eight targets last week for 103 yards and a touchdown. He's now scored twice in the last three games.

While his recent production is exciting, it's important to remember he gets a tough matchup against Detroit this week. Teddy Bridgewater will likely struggle, which will lead to less yards for Johnson.

He has upside, but is best be viewed as a WR4.

MIN WR Charles Johnson - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Charles Johnson - Week 14 vs. New York Jets

Over the last three games Charles Johnson has finished as the Vikings' top receiver twice, and fell just a few yards shy of it in the other. He's starting to become the best receiver in Minnesota for fantasy purposes.

Even though Johnson's stock is going up, he's hardly a superstar. He's playing in a poor Vikings' offense that rarely exceeds 200 yards passing. This week he gets a decent matchup against the Jets, but it wont make Johnson a trustworthy start. The Vikings' offense ultimately harms Johnson and makes him a WR4 at best.

MIN WR Charles Johnson - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Charles Johnson - Week 13 vs. Carolina Panthers

Teddy Bridgewater and the Vikings were trying to force-feed Charles Johnson the football last week and came away with moderate success. Johnson finished with three receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets (team high). Johnson now has two big games in a row and is starting to emerge as the best option at wideout on the Vikings.

Being the best option at wideout on the Vikings isn't the greatest compliment, however. It's not typical for these guys to have huge games. Jarius Wright is the only receiver to surpass 100 receiving yards in a game.

Johnson gets a good matchup against Carolina this week, but he's still on the Vikings' offense. He's a WR4 at best.

CLE WR Charles Johnson - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

A 6’2” receiver with good speed, Charles Johnson arrived in Cleveland last year after being a seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers. A torn ACL suffered prior to his arrival in Cleveland prevented the Browns from taking a look at him right away, but Charles has generally received positive reviews from the Cleveland brass. Unfortunately for Johnson, he is not occupying a prime position on the depth chart. Will that change as we get deeper into the season?

Fantasy Upside
Fortunately for Johnson, the people higher than him on the depth chart don’t remind anyone of Jerry Rice. Miles Austin has been capable in the past, but hasn’t been able to stay healthy in recent seasons. Travis Benjamin is a role player and Andrew Hawkins is a slot receiver. If Charles can establish himself, he could see the field quite a bit. His athleticism could be a plus.

Fantasy Downside
Johnson is raw, having played college ball at Grand Valley State, a small school. He has yet to play in an NFL game. After catching three passes in Cleveland’s first preseason contest against Detroit, he was largely quiet after that, with three catches in the next three games. Some of this can be attributed to off-kilter quarterback play, but it’s also a sign Johnson’s progression may have slowed.

Bottom Line
Right now, fantasy owners would be wise not to put Charles in charge or on their roster. Maybe he can surprise at some point and be worth a free agent acquisition, but don’t bet the ranch on it.
