Scouting report

GB WR Christian Watson - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The fantasy upside with Christian Watson was on display in Weeks 7-10 last season when he averaged 22.9 fantasy points per game (in Half-PPR scoring). Watson averaged an incredible 2.5 yards per route run last season, which was tied for seventh in the league. He was highly efficient with the ball in his hands, he also added 7 carries for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season as well. We could easily see his role expand, but if it he just maintains the role he saw in the second half of the season, seeing close to seven targets per game, his efficiency should be able to maintain a level of success.

Fantasy Downside
The downside to Watson is that he might be getting drafted at his ceiling. His current ADP (40.9 and WR21) is quite high for a player on the extremes of efficiency and on an offense breaking in a new quarterback. If Jordan Love doesn’t live up to moderate expectations, the pass volume will likely drop and he won’t be able to thrive on efficiency alone. The Packers could also just run even more with their two-headed monster at RB even if Love is playing well.

2023 Bottom Line
There are paths to “failure” at his ADP, but his upside seems immense given what he was able to do as a rookie coming from a small school in North Dakota State. His drops are a bit worrying at 10%, which was tied for seventh in the league, but Matt LaFleur showed a willingness to get creative with his young playmaker last year. Draft at cost.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Minnesota Vikings
Rookie Christian Watson enters Week 17 with serious availability concerns due to a hip issue keeping him out of practice entirely on Wednesday and Thursday. Fantasy managers counting on Watson as a starter will have to wait and check his status on the injury report Friday. Even if Watson is active, he has taken a big step back from a fantasy perspective after his absurd touchdown streak back in Weeks 10-13. Watson has 14 targets and 10 receptions over the last two weeks, but has failed to break 50 receiving yards or score a touchdown in either of those games. Watson has intriguing upside, but the injury concern and fact that he is largely dependent on touchdowns make him a risky play this week, even in a dream matchup against Minnesota's terrible secondary.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Miami Dolphins
Christian Watson's completely unsustainable touchdown streak came to an end in Week 15 when he failed to score for the first time in five games despite getting three red zone targets. Watson's 4-46-0 line leaves a lot to be desired, but his usage near the end zone continues to be excellent and he clearly has established himself as one of Aaron Rodgers' favorite weapons late in his rookie season. This week Watson will take on Xavien Howard and the Dolphins' secondary, a unit that ranks near the middle-of-the-pack against opposing wideouts. Watson was bound to see some touchdown regression and that could continue this week, but he still makes for an interesting WR3 option in light of his newly found rapport with Rodgers.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Los Angeles Rams
Christian Watson only managed three catches and 48 yards in Week 14, but he managed to score yet another touchdown which puts him at seven over his last four games. Needless to say, Watson will eventually feel some regression in the touchdown department, but he also has not seen fewer than six targets in that same span after topping out at four prior to Week 10. Watson and the Packers take on the Rams in LA this week, and while the Rams are reeling from injuries on the offensive side of the ball, they still boast a talented defense that has been above average against opposing wide receivers. Despite the matchup, Watson is a worthy fantasy starter given his recent red zone usage.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Chicago Bears
Christian Watson's rookie season has been a slow burn, but his potential has been on display the last three weeks with three straight finishes as a WR1 in fantasy. Watson is now at six touchdowns over that span and has broken the 100-yard mark twice. The Bears are about average when it comes to slowing down opposing receivers, and it looks like Aaron Rodgers is set to play in Week 13 despite a broken thumb and taking a hard shot to the ribs last week. Watson has clearly proven himself worthy of a large target share with his recent play, and he makes for a good starting option on the road in Chicago this week.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Philadelphia Eagles
Christian Watson is making some serious noise in fantasy circles lately with five touchdowns on his last eight receptions over the course of two games. Before anointing Watson the next Cooper Kupp, realize that his current touchdown rate is completely unsustainable, although it does appear that the Packers are making a concerted effort to utilize him in the red zone. Watson's recent production can't be ignored, and he has clearly earned some additional opportunities in the Green Bay offense. That being said, the Packers get a difficult matchup against the Eagles' pass defense this week and Watson's absurd touchdown rate will likely take a hit on the road in Philly. While it would be unreasonable to expect multiple touchdowns from Watson again this week, it is no longer unreasonable to consider him as a WR3 play given what we've seen him do in recent weeks.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs. Tennessee Titans
Christian Watson has had a slow rookie year to this point but saw a huge bump in usage in Week 10 when he played 85% of the Packers' offensive snaps and saw eight targets. He caught four balls for 107 yards and three touchdowns to finish as the weekly WR3 in fantasy. The performance should do wonders for Watson's confidence and Aaron Rodgers' trust in him as a go-to receiver. It would be shortsighted to expect WR1 usage for Watson every week moving forward, but his bump in playing time and exciting performance in Week 10 cannot be ignored. He gets a great matchup in Week 11 against the Titans poor pass defense, and should be picked up in any league he's sitting on the waiver wire for flex consideration.
