Although the Raiders were happy with the progression of Mychal Rivera last year, that did not stop them from selecting Clive Walford from the University of Miami in the third round of the draft. Miami has been an absolute hot bed for tight ends over the past 15 years, with players such as Greg Olsen and Jimmy Graham currently among the best in the league at the position. So while Clive has high standards to live up to, his main focus is helping the Raiders and young quarterback Derek Carr. What will we see from Walford during his rookie tour of the league?
2015 Upside
In his first season at Miami, Walford caught 18 passes for one touchdown. During his senior season, he had 44 receptions for 676 yards and seven touchdowns. He was at his best down the stretch with two touchdown catches in a victory over North Carolina and 127 yards and a score as Miami just missed pulling off an upset over ACC champion Florida State. That is the kind of progression you want to see from a player and Walford is more gifted athletically than Rivera.
2015 Downside
Walford has missed a big chunk of Oakland’s training camp practices. Most tight ends struggle as rookies and falling behind out of the gate is an added detriment -- especially with Rivera already having earned Carr’s trust. Oakland’s offense will be slanted towards the run and fellow rookie Amari Cooper is the heavy favorite to lead the Raiders in targets.
Bottom Line
Walford is a decent dynasty prospect, but his redraft value is low. His best-case scenario would be sneaking into TE2 territory and landing on fantasy rosters as a free agent.
