OAK TE Clive Walford - Week 2, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Atlanta
Clive Walford recorded 3 receptions for 25 yards on five targets in a 35-34 win against the Saints in Week 1. Walford comes into Week 2 averaging just 3.13 targets for 20.56 yards and 0.19 TDs last season. The Falcons gave up the most targets to TEs (24.9%) in the league last year, not to mention two touchdowns just last week to the position. Walford will be a low-end TE2 against Atlanta, who grade out as one of our highest ranked teams in TE aFPA.

OAK TE Clive Walford - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Raiders took Clive Walford at No.68 in last years draft and he where he immediately found himself in a time share situation with Mychal Rivera and Lee Smith. Smith was actually the one who saw the most snaps of the three as he served as the primary blocking tight end. Walford was used as both a pass catcher and a blocker at nearly an even rate. HE averaged 5.2 targets per game in Weeks 13-17 where he really came on as the offense struggled in general.

Fantasy Downside
The primary options in the passing game are Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, and Seth Roberts. The running backs will also be involved in the short-intermediate game so it could be touch sledding for Walford to get consistent targets in 2016.

2016 Bottom Line
This will be a run first offense in Oakland but Walford could find himself in streamer territory throughout the season if he can win a big enough role. Walford has been behind Smith so far on the depth chart, though the blocking tight end is not a threat to Walford’s workload.

OAK TE Clive Walford - Week 17, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Kansas City

Clive Walford was once again quiet in Week 16, catching one pass for 22 yards as Oakland beat San Diego 23-20 in overtime. Walford was targeted just three times by Derek Carr after he was targeted 14 times by Carr in Oakland’s previous two contests. He heads into the final week of the season with 24 receptions for 283 yards and three touchdowns, which means he is probably on the waiver wire if your league is still going this week. And you should leave him there.

OAK TE Clive Walford - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs San Diego

In Week 15, Clive Walford was targeted seven times. He caught two passes for 10 yards. In Week 14, Walford was also targeted seven times, but finished with three receptions for 47 yards.

While the usage shows the Raiders like Clive and believe he has a bright future, five catches for 57 yards over two games is not going to win games for fantasy owners who are trying to capture a championship, especially when Walford failed to find the end zone in both contests. If everything breaks right, Walford might be worth a late-round gamble in 2016 redraft leagues, but right now he needs to remain on the waiver wire.

OAK TE Clive Walford - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. New York Jets
Promising rookie Clive Walford caught his first NFL touchdown pass last weekend. There had been indications the Raiders were going to give him a larger role, and they delivered. Nevertheless, Walford was targeted less than fellow tight end Mychal Rivera, let alone leading wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper. Walford is worth watching, but is not worth a waiver claim just yet -- especially since he will be dueling with a tough New York defense.

OAK TE Clive Walford - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Although the Raiders were happy with the progression of Mychal Rivera last year, that did not stop them from selecting Clive Walford from the University of Miami in the third round of the draft. Miami has been an absolute hot bed for tight ends over the past 15 years, with players such as Greg Olsen and Jimmy Graham currently among the best in the league at the position. So while Clive has high standards to live up to, his main focus is helping the Raiders and young quarterback Derek Carr. What will we see from Walford during his rookie tour of the league?

2015 Upside
In his first season at Miami, Walford caught 18 passes for one touchdown. During his senior season, he had 44 receptions for 676 yards and seven touchdowns. He was at his best down the stretch with two touchdown catches in a victory over North Carolina and 127 yards and a score as Miami just missed pulling off an upset over ACC champion Florida State. That is the kind of progression you want to see from a player and Walford is more gifted athletically than Rivera.

2015 Downside
Walford has missed a big chunk of Oakland’s training camp practices. Most tight ends struggle as rookies and falling behind out of the gate is an added detriment -- especially with Rivera already having earned Carr’s trust. Oakland’s offense will be slanted towards the run and fellow rookie Amari Cooper is the heavy favorite to lead the Raiders in targets.

Bottom Line
Walford is a decent dynasty prospect, but his redraft value is low. His best-case scenario would be sneaking into TE2 territory and landing on fantasy rosters as a free agent.
