Scouting report

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Cooper Kupp has arguably been the best fantasy asset on the Rams roster this season. He's the overall fantasy WR10 in 0.5 PPR scoring formats, he leads his team in targets, and he's increased his fantasy output each week. Kupp has benefitted somewhat from Jared Goff experiencing a high rate of pressure, as Kupp's 6.7-yard aDOT equates to routes that are quick to develop.

Tampa Bay, the Rams' Week 4 opponent, has allowed an aFPA of 36.0 to wide receivers, 15th-fewest out of 32 teams. This isn't a matchup to shy away from, since regardless of where Kupp lines up, he'll be facing a cornerback who's struggled so far in 2019. This matchup supports a pass-heavy game script, and Vegas gives the Rams the highest implied team total of the week, tied with the Chargers who are facing the defensively-challenged Dolphins. Kupp is quite safe as a WR1 start.

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns
Cooper Kupp has come the closest to returning value on his ADP among Rams wide receivers, and he's currently the fantasy WR29 in 0.5 PPR scoring. He's slightly behind Cooks and Woods in snap share, but leads the team in target rate at 14.1%, and leads Los Angeles with 0.22 PPR points per snap.

Kupp draws the softest primary matchup among Rams wide receivers opposite Cleveland's slot cornerback T.J. Carrie. He also has an aDOT of 6.0 yards along with the 5th-most yards after the catch among all wide receivers, and if Cleveland's defense continues its pass-rushing success, Kupp should benefit from quick passes and crossing routes. Kupp is as good bet to return WR2 value in Week 3.

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New Orleans Saints
It was great to see Cooper Kupp back in regular-season action in Week 1, though his fantasy output was less than thrilling. His seven receptions saved him from a really poor outing in PPR formats, but the Rams' unexpectedly ineffective passing performance was the real issue.
Kupp ran almost 70% of his routes from the slot in 2018, which equates to primary coverage from the Saints' slot cornerback P.J. Williams in Week 2. Kupp was Los Angeles' most frequently targeted wide receiver in the red zone when active last year, and with a Vegas game projected points total of 54 that's the highest on the slate, there should be plenty of scoring opportunities. Kupp also averaged nine targets per game in 2018, which considerably raises his fantasy floor in PPR formats. Kupp is startable as a high-end WR2 in Week 2.

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Carolina Panthers

Cooper Kupp's second season in 2018 was a story of missed opportunity. Injuries cost him eight games, but his value to the Rams was evident in the games he played. Kupp's 3.07 PPR fantasy points per touch were higher than either Cooks (2.70) or Woods (2.53), and he operated primarily as Los Angeles' slot receiver.

Cupp draws the Carolina Panthers defense in Week 1, and should see plenty of coverage from slot cornerback Ross Cockrell. Cockrell's been a solid corner in coverage over the last few years, but he is returning from a horrific leg injury last preseason, and while he is rehabilitated and ready to play, it is his first game back. It may be a small edge for Kupp who is returning from injury himself, but you can start him with confidence as a WR2.

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
In the games in which Cooper Kupp was active alongside Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks in 2018, his 12.8% target rate was the highest among the three. His 12 red zone targets matched Robert Woods for second-most among Rams wide receivers, despite Kupp having played in only eight games. Kupp's connection with Goff resulted in Kupp scoring 3.07 PPR fantasy points per touch, a number that again led Los Angeles' top receiver trio.

Fantasy Downside
Kupp enters the Rams' training camp just nine months removed from surgery to repair his ACL, which is on the very early end of a normal recovery timeline. Kupp's recent injury history is hard to ignore, as he suffered a concussion and a sprained MCL in 2018 before his ACL injury. With the arrival of Darrell Henderson as a receiving option out of the backfield, the Rams could see a reduction in their use of 11-personnel, which could, in turn, reduce Kupp's target volume.

2019 Bottom Line
Kupp is the WR29 in our rankings, but the WR21 by ADP, with the cost of an early fifth-round pick. He's got a ceiling as a high-end WR2, but presents more of an injury risk than other wide receiver options in his ADP neighborhood like Chris Godwin, Tyler Lockett, and Calvin Ridley. His availability and usage in the preseason is something to keep an eye on, but he's a player that the risk-averse should look to avoid at his current ADP.

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Cooper Kupp caught five-of-six targets for 89 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ Week 9 loss to the Saints. He started slow, catching one pass in the first half but then caught fire in the final quarter, hauling in three passes, which included a 41-yard touchdown on the game-tying scoring drive. The Rams eventually lost but it was an excellent return for Kupp, who missed a few games due to injury. Ranked as our WR15 for Week 10, view Kupp as a WR2 for Sunday’s matchup between the Rams and Seahawks, who rank as the No. 21 defense against fantasy receivers.

LAR WR Cooper Kupp - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at New Orleans Saints

The Rams expect that Cooper Kupp (knee) will return Sunday when they take on the Saints. He missed the past two games with an injury, but he will be a WR2 upon his return. Kupp has an excellent matchup against a New Orleans defense that ranks dead last against fantasy receivers this season. Ranked as our WR19, make sure Kupp is back in your lineup when the Rams and Saints play their expected shootout on Sunday afternoon.
