Scouting report

KC RB Damien Williams - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Damien Williams was virtually unknown heading into last season, but he made a name for himself filling in for Kareem Hunt late in the year. In three regular season games, he averaged 107.3 yards and carried that dominance into the postseason, averaging 125 yards per contest. He was effective as a rusher (averaging 5.1 ypc) and as a receiver (5+ receptions in four of his five starts). He’ll enter 2019 as the Chiefs starting back, paving the way for what should be another successful season.

Fantasy Downside
We have a very small sample size of Williams’ production. In his five starts last season, he only had more than 13 carries in one game. Will he be able to last over the course of a 16-game season and keep up the level of production he had last year? Also, Carlos Hyde has been added to the backfield, giving Williams competition he didn’t have a season ago.

2019 Bottom Line
While Hyde adds some competition, it likely won’t be enough to devalue Williams too much. There’s a lot to like about Williams in this high-powered Chiefs offense, especially in PPR formats. We have him ranked as a top 10 back and his ADP has him going outside of the top 10, so as of now, he’s a good value pick.

KC RB Damien Williams - Week 19 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 19 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Spencer Ware is still listed as questionable and Damien Williams has been the lead back in his absence to finish the last three games of the season. In his first two starts he topped 100 all-purpose yards, but in Week 17 he was limited to just 51 rushing yards on 11 carries (backup Darrel Williams also received 11 carries). It was still a solid game for Williams as he also had a touchdown, something he's done in every game since Ware's absence.

He gets a somewhat tough matchup this week against the Colts, who became better at stopping the run as the season went on. However, Indy gave up 110 receptions to backs (second-most in the league) so there's a chance for Williams to make an impact as a receiver. There are some elite backs ahead of Williams on the rankings this week, but he's not a bad choice.

KC RB Damien Williams - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Oakland Raiders

Damien Williams has filled in nicely after the team released Kareem Hunt and Spencer Ware has been out with injury. In fact, Kansas City gave him a 2-year contract extension, which leads us to believe he'll continue carrying the rock even though Ware is expected back this week. Williams has scored five times in the last three games while going over 100 yards in his last two outings. He gets a great matchup against the Raiders so we like him as a must-start RB1 option.

KC RB Damien Williams - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Seattle Seahawks

Damien Williams exploded last week while Spencer Ware sat out, finishing with 123 total yards and two touchdowns. He did most of his damage as a receiver, catching all six targets for 74 yards. Spencer Ware has been practicing this week, and he received extra rest due to K.C. playing on Thursday last week, so it's expected that Ware returns. What will Williams' role be with Ware back in? It's somewhat hard to determine.

We'd expect some sort of committee, but it's impossible to predict what the split would be. All we know is this is a decent matchup against the Seahawks, and Williams has scored four times in the last two weeks. Williams can be viewed as a flex play.

KC RB Damien Williams - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Damien Williams vultured two touchdowns last week, one on the ground and one in the air. He didn't look too impressive as a runner, averaging 1.8 yards on his eight carries, but he did catch four of his five targets, giving him some added value in PPR formats. Williams will take over lead duties this week as Spencer Ware is listed as doubtful for Thursday.

He gets a decent matchup this week against the Chargers who are in the middle of the league when it comes to defending backs this season. We don't expect Kareem Hunt numbers from Williams, but he should be good enough for RB2 stats.

KC RB Damien Williams - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Baltimore Ravens

Damien Williams finished with 45 yards on seven touches last week. Spencer Ware was the featured back, but Williams had a bigger role as a backup than Ware had most of the season. Williams should get a few touches in this matchup, but he's not really relevant for fantasy purposes.

MIA RB Damien Williams - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Kansas City Chiefs

Miami has the fourth-lowest implied team total in Vegas this week at 16.5 points, and the Dolphins must go on the road to face a Chiefs team still playing for the AFC West crown. Not a good combination. Damien Williams may return this week, but the emergence of Kenyan Drake over the past month renders him fantasy irrelevant.
